Smith & Wesson Corp. is now offering versions of its popular M&P Shield™ pistol in both 9mm and .40 S&W without the single-sided thumb safety. Brought to market after numerous requests from private citizens, law enforcement professionals and firearm retailers, the new models retain original design features that have helped to solidify the M&P Shield’s reputation in the marketplace as a reliable, accurate self-defense firearm. Whether deployed as a backup sidearm for police personnel, a deep concealment pistol for plain-clothes officers or an every-day firearm for concealed carry permit holders, the M&P Shield has been met with wide approval.

The M&P Shield is shipped with both an extended and flat magazine offering consumers the ability to customize the length of the grip. The 9mm M&P Shield offers an 8+1 or 7+1 magazine capacity while the .40 S&W M&P Shield is standard with either a 7+1 or 6+1 magazine capacity. Both the 9mm and .40 S&W M&P Shield carry an MSRP of $449 and are backed by Smith & Wesson’s Lifetime Service policy. Where prohibited, state compliant models of the M&P Shield with no thumb safety are also available.

I bought a Smith & Wesson model 22-A around a year ago. To my surprise, it had no extractor. It fired 3 or 4 rounds before jamming despite not having one.

I will say their customer service was first rate. It could not have been better. I had it back repaired within a week.

My regular summer carry gun is a 642. Light, small and plenty good.

I have owned N frame S&Ws in .45 Colt, .44 mag, .41 mag and .357 mag.

Every single one was perfect, not a flaw on them. a Model 27 with an 8-3/8 inch barrel may have been the most accurate but not sure. They were all fine shooters.

Probably the best shooting I have ever done was with a model 57 in .41 mag when I was demonstrating it to a guy I was selling it to. He did not even want to shoot it but he paid me more than it was worth after seeing what it could do.

OK, for real: Recommendations for a CCW — make, model, capacity, holster, accessories? I lean towards pistol over revolver, .40 S&W over other ammo, but would appreciate advice & insight. Am out early for exercise and have had a pistol pulled on me. Refuse to be a victim.

Bonus question: best home defense weapon? I like the idea of a high cap, rapid firing shotgun.

Thanks.

I agree about the repeating shotgun for home defense.

If you carry it in a shoulder holster there are a huge number of good guns. I used to carry a Glock 19 in 9mm in a Galco shoulder holster. Probably as good as any.

I picked up my 36 new for about $134 back in 75 when I was stationed in Pensacola. We tried to shoot every week at one of the many sandpits. I`m sure I ran 5 to 10K rounds thru it. It amazed me how accurate it was with its fixed sights.
