I loved that as a kid too, great Ray Harryhausen black-and-white time-stop back-screen effects with the Beast walking down the NYC streets stepping on cars and NYC flat-foots. 'AHHHHH', need good screams..
See Japs???
, we had our own Godzilla and he wasn't just a guy in a lizard suit walking around a dollhouse city.
Sadly this is what I think of the Hobbit movies following the original LOTR. The original 3 had some CGI but majority was filmed outdoors. I liked the Hobbit movies but was disappointed that they relied on the computer too much.
I saw Gorgo at the theater when I was a kid! I always thought he was the precursor to Godzilla.
No thats Gorezilla
“...The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms....”
I LOVED Ray Harryhausen’s critters because they never looked like a guy in a rubber suit.
Ray Harryhausen learned his artcraft from Willis O’Brien, the man who created King King and Stop-Action special effect monsters.
I still remember the scene in the original King Kong where he was fighting the T-Rex, and the tail was twitching back and forth on the Rex... it just looked PISSED!!!
Great movie from our childhood. Still love it.
Don't forget the scene cut out where after Kong dumps them in canyon the monsters come out for lunch (a huge lizard, crab and a spider)
King Kong (1933): The Lost Spider Pit Sequence - Peter Jackson Recreation
The skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts scared the crap out of me.
YES!!!!
One of the coolest scenes ever!!!
The Hydra was nasty too!
How about a special GODZILLA vs BARNEY MOVIE!

OMG... I have NEVER seen that original footage.
When I was a kid, and if I’d seen that sequence, I would have had nightmares for a year...
That was amazing.
Peter Jackson’s nightmare version of it was really bad, but I never knew there was an original of it.
The ONLY part I call “foul” on was the guy with the Thompson HOSING the critter off the other guy’s face. No way in hell... other than that, it was gruesome and WELL-DONE for the shock value.
MY FAVORITE! Scared the Unowatt out of me as a kid! And then came...20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH
Then this
Then there was GORGO and THE GREAT BEHEMOTH.
Well when boring is the leads main trait the rest of the film has got to follow. I never ever saw anything that Broderick did where I felt I was seeing talent.
I think they have gone overboard with computer graphics, and trying to overwhelm us with special effects.
To me, special effects do NOT make up for not having a good underlying story to tell in the first place.

Yeah, it’s like the Witch Doctor who’s run out of good stories to tell (or is no longer any good at telling them), so he wows the villagers by throwing fire-dust into the campfire.
“Godzilla needs to be a guy in a rubber suit. Kids today just cant understand that.”
Yes! And he must crush massive balsa wood cities. Anything else is just ontologically wrong!
