Do we have a resident computer expert here today?

Posted on 05/09/2014 6:29:57 AM PDT by LouAvul

I replaced my desktop (Dell w/XP OS) with a new one (Dell w/Win 7 OS) when Microsoft discontinued support for XP. Now, I cannot print Adobe PDF files. I can print Word, etc, but just not PDF. I discovered this when I tried to print a hard copy of my Turbotax.

I finally had to save TT to a flash drive and print it off on my wife's computer (also Dell w/Win 7 OS). PDF will print on her computer and printer, both of which are older than my compuer and printer.

The printer is an Officejet HP multifunction. Copier, scanner, fax and printer. I've downloaded all available updates from HP to no avail.

What happens is that I get about 1/2 page of text as is on the file. Then I get a page with about one line of garbled images. Hearts, diamonds, etc.

Then blank pages until the printer stops printing. It doesn't end the print job, it just sits there with lights flashing like it does when it's actually printing something.

Then I have to hit "cancel print" on the printer, go into control panel to cancel the print job, etc.

I read online where some people with the same problem have been able to use the "print as image" function to print. But Win 7 doesn't have that option.

I also disabled the "enable protected mode at start up" option.

Maybe someone here has experienced the same problem?

Thanks.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling Adobe reader, or whatever it is you are trying to print the PDF out of.

Try print as image and see if that helps.

if uninstalling/reinstalling is unsuccessful search the web for your issue, you might be surprised at how many people have had the same issue. Also I have found that youtube can be most helpful.

Somewhere in the print options in Adobe, there is an option to "print as image". See if that is checked or unchecked and try the opposite. I'm not sure what the problem is, but you can first check to see if "print as image" will at least get you printing.

I’m no expert, but I played one at the last place I worked. Go to the printer manufacturer’s website and search for the latest driver. Install that. I think your driver is the wrong one for that printer.

He said there is no option for that. You think it’s a software thing? Has he tried Libre Office and printing from there?

Its not a Win 7 problem. I print PDFs all the time. Reinstall adobe and or printer drivers would be my suggestion.

From Adobe Reader, click File > Print.

Click Advanced.

Check the Print as Image option.

The best free utility for creating PDF files from any application -- > Cute PDF Writer.

I use it on all my PCs. Highly recommended.

Yeah, that should only take a couple of hours at most, once you research how to do each step of the process, get it wrong, try again, reboot your computer a few dozen times, etc., etc.

Note: I'm not criticizing you, driftdiver; I think your advice is sound.

What drives me crazy is that pretty much every time I want to print something out (which happens about once every three months) I invariably have to essentially debug the entire printer chain-of-events, which I already did the last time I printed something out.

He said there is no option for that.

I think Post 9 has it right. The "advanced" button is right next to the printer selection dropdown.
