Last Day for John Wayne Film Festival on TCM

I normally watch Turner Classic Movies on a regular basis, but the last month or so has been brutal and I've been able to watch very little. Sadly, I just found out that John Wayne is their Star of the Month for April. Instead of showing his films on several nights a week, TCM is currently doing a marathon of his films. I'm trying to figure out what shows to dump from my DVR in order to record some ones that I haven't seen in quite some time. Today is the official last day of the marathon and there are great ones to catch. Here's a list of what'll be showing on TCM.

Friday 6:15am - Tall in the Saddle 7:45am - Without Reservations 9:45am - Tycoon 12:00pm - Angel and the Badman 1:45pm - Trouble Along the Way 3:45pm - Big Jim McLain 5:15pm - Rio Bravo 8:00pm - North to Alaska 10:15pm - McLintock!

Saturday 12:45am - The Shootist 2:30am - The Sons of Katie Elder 4:45am - The Greatest Story Ever Told 8:15am - Big Jake

As you can see, the movies run the gamut from westerns to comedy to romance. My recommendations are Tall in the Saddle, Angel and the Badman, Trouble Along the Way, Big Jim McLain, Rio Bravo, The Shootist, and The Sons of Katie Elder. Angel and the Badman mixes John Wayne with Harry Carey as Wayne tries to renounce violence for the love of a Quaker woman. Trouble Along the Way has the Duke as a college football coach trying to raise his daughter and rebuild a program at a woeful Catholic institution. Rio Bravo is the ultimate guy movie along with Dean Martin as the drunken Dude. Big Jim McLain has the Duke and James Arness ferreting out commies in Hawaii. Liberals like to make fun of the movie, but Soviet archives show that the movie is chillingly correct in how the Soviets used useful idiots to undermine our republic. Lastly, what can you say about The Shootist, his last film? I still get choked up watching it, no matter how many times I see it.

As you can see, there's a lot of good, patriotic entertainment just waiting to be watched. I just wish that I had checked the TCM website before now. But if I had done, I probably would have gotten a lot less work done.

Join Amazon Prime. About a hundred bucks for an entire year, free shipping on most of your purchases, and, I’m guessing, every film of the Duke streamed free direct to your TV.

Apologies. I forgot to format the list of movies and I don’t see a way to edit the original post.

I have a friend who’s been telling me to join Amazon Prime. I’ve been meaning to check them out. Thanks for the tip.

Join. You will be amazed. The free Amazon shipping alone for an entire year more than pays for the membership, and you get insanely more movies and TV shows than you’ll EVER find on Netflix, many or most of them free.

Trouble Along the Way a favorite for me, but not for Wayne, Charles Coburn or Donna Reed. Sherry Jackson as Wayne's young, wisecracking daughter steals the movie. And Google images of Sherry after she matured -- a real beauty. Unfortunately she became typecast as the brunette bombshell in bad pictures. From an episode of Star Trek some may recall:

I dumped Amazon Prime when Jeff Bezos donated $4M to the campaign to push gay marriage in Washington State. I don’t want my money used to further the advance of perversion.

Who plays (Barry H's father) Frank Marshall Davis in this movie?

No The Searchers? Fort Apache? I could go on but it seems like a lot of his best is missing.

I second that. Amazon raised the price from $79 to $99 earlier this year, but considering the free two-day shipping you get on anything purchased through prime, plus movies and TV shows, I think it's still a good deal.

Great song from the movie....And Constance Towers was perfect in the role.

"We'll march right into HELL...for Ulysses Simpson Grant!"

John Ford was a genius, pure and simple...the movies he did with The Duke are awesome.."Fort Apache" "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon"

They showed those on Tuesday night (Apr 22) -- including The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (along with Rio Bravo, my personal favorite Duke movies). Wednesday was WW II night, including the incomparable They Were Expendable.

I suspect the reason TCM “crammed” the Wayne movies in such an unusual manner was due to the deaths of Shirley Temple Black and Mickey Rooney. Not completely sure on that but I watch TCM on a daily basis...some weeks anyway. I don’t recall ever seeing them program their star of the month this way....oh and the TCM Festival landed this month too
