Others have noticed that teachers think of themselves as one step removed from coal mine workers

“Teachers get all sorts of days off so their real work schedule is like 190 days.”

In MI we had an unusual amount of snow days this year, as did most of the states. I was shocked to see a news story about “make up days.” In the story they pointed out that the requirement is for 1,098 instructional hours. That equates to 27.45 40 hour work weeks. I couldn’t beleive that it was so low!

I work in manufacturing and when planning for the utilization of capital equipment, we use 47.5 production weeks per year. I’d assume that most industries utilize a similar schedule.

I do realize that classroom teachers actually do work outside of those “instructional hours.” That said, look at the math: 1098 / 47.5 weeks = 23.12 hrs per average work week. Even if the classroom teacher spends an additional 50% of their time towards work, then it would still only be an average work week of 34.67 hr weeks. The vast majority of the salaried folks I know in manufacturing work a minimum of 47.5 hr work weeks and many work additional hours at home.

I’m not intending to attack any individual teachers, however I was surprised when I scoped the disconnect....

That’s an insult to coal mine workers, teachers are way down the list, like rock bottom!

Those that can do, those that can’t teach!

“For every union contract, there are two signing parties. Teacher and police contracts are agreements signed by both the city officials and the union officials. No one ever bitches about the other side of the agreement. Instead, all the complaints go directly to the cop or the teacher.”

I actually place more blame on the pols than I do the teachers, in fact, I place the least blame on the class room teachers. The problem is that we have severely over populated the educrat administration and political departments, therefore we are hampering the individual teachers as badly as we are hampering business development.

The problem is that the politicians turn to the teachers (and police) union leaders for donations, then the union leaders push their herd of members into the voting booths on off election years, resulting in another .5 or 1.0 mils to be placed on the property of a 100K homeowners. These votes end up with a tally of 11K for the increase vs 9K against the increase!

It is becoming increasingly rigged against the homeowners, businesses and even the individual teachers. Then we are bombarded with constant message of “not enough money in education” while the administration class continues to hamper teaching of students!

Finally, everyone is frustrated and bickering and the pols, union leadership and administrators are laughing all the way to another election victory....

And the sheeple bleat....

Not only that but teachers get planning days, and planning periods, and all sorts of allotments. Notice that the blow hard who wanted me to know how hard teachers work never answered my question about union dues or the quality of education or the comparison between teachers and other workers (which you just so nicely gave).

There are good teachers and that are rotten teachers. The good ones don’t pay union dues but find a way to redirect that money to other good causes (like the paper fund at the school). Good teachers also don’t complain about grading papers since that is part of the job. Good teachers don’t have to defend themselves because they know they are doing a good job
