Trapped by the law-For an undocumented couple, the fear of deportation is worth
IDS ^ | FEB. 7, 2014 | MICHAEL AUSLEN

For an undocumented couple, the fear of deportation is worth it for the hope of reform. Behind the steering wheel, Sandra is cautious. She doesn’t know what will happen if she makes one wrong move.

Driving without a license would earn her enough trouble with the police, but her secret is more serious — Sandra is an undocumented immigrant. Flashing red and blue lights in the rearview mirror could mean deportation, the end of her family’s life in Bloomington.

“We feel so frustrated that one of these days some police or something asks for my driver’s license, and I don’t have it,” she said.

She remembers the time one of her friends was pulled over. He was a father of three with a business in town. He had lived in Bloomington for more than 10 years. His taillight was out. He was almost deported.

It’s a constant fear for Sandra and her husband, Israel, who left Juarez, Mexico, together in 2010.

They both have college degrees, Sandra’s in communications and Israel’s in graphic design. Before they left Juarez, just across the border from Texas, they had professional careers.

Four years after driving across the border, Sandra and Israel still live here. They shop at Wal-Mart, stress about entertaining family members during the holidays and drive a Subaru Outback with a yellow “Baby on board” sign hanging in the window.

Every day, they face the challenges of outcasts in American society: the fear of a police officer asking to see a driver’s license, confused looks from passersby when they speak Spanish in public, putting their dream of owning a business on hold while they clean 10 houses every week to earn a living.

Sandra and Israel’s hometown is ground zero for the drug cartels. Juarez provides a link to the United States through El Paso, Texas, across the Rio Grande. Cartel violence is prominent. Shootings and kidnappings and beheadings tear the city apart...Now these are college educated people and there is no reason on earth why they cannot relocate and live some where else in Mexico.Other college educated people in mexico are working and making a living. No reason they cannot. Being educated in Mexico is a huge plus..

“We feel so frustrated that one of these days some police or something asks for my driver’s license, and I don’t have it,”..I assume she thinks she should be free to drive without license/insurance...What happens when they cause an accident ? The people whom she hits will be very frustrated, these illegals out on the roads without licenses/insurance will not have to pay any restitution, will not have to pay any medical bills, will not have to pay for damages to car..All they can say sorry no insurance. The illegals always think only of themselves. In her sob story not one word about, I worry if I cause an accident it could ruin a family causing them extreme hardship,we cannot pay for anything.

Their documents are in their country. Reunite them with their documents: DEPORT THEM.

Why dont we teleport some impoverished Indians to clean houses. They have worse lives than Mexicans.

Mexico is booming I dont’ see why a couple can’t find work anywhere in Central America. Argentina is a good middle class country they could go to.

Do people who say that have any idea how many millions of children are living in dire poverty in India, Africa, or other places “through no fault of their own” and would be better off living in the United States?

She is not an ‘undocumented immigrant.’ She is an illegal alien.

“We feel so frustrated that one of these days some police or something asks for my driver’s license, and I don’t have it,” she said.

So they are still breaking the law. Don't make Sotomayor angry by calling them criminals, either. Don't they have buses in Bloomington?

They both have college degrees, Sandra’s in communications and Israel’s in graphic design. Before they left Juarez, just across the border from Texas, they had professional careers.

They obviously came here to do the jobs Americans won't do, as that a-hole used to say ad nauseum.

Both professionals. Both working. Gave all that up to break into our country so they can clean houses for a living? Hmmm... what's wrong with this pic?

If they could suddenly become full fledged US citizens they still probably couldn't get a job because the economy sucks and they'd be way behind in the technology needed to perform their job.

This article smells.

Too bad, so sad. There wouldn’t be any fear IF THEY HADN’T COME HERE ILLEGALLY!

Don’t care. Don’t freaking care one bit.

They are criminals, illegal aliens and should be deported pronto, wait, what's this; and drive a Subaru Outback with a yellow “Baby on board” sign hanging in the window

Oh, that's different, never mind, welcome, welcome, make yourself at home and don't worry about all those silly laws that I must obey or pay the price...

If only it were so. I know good, decent families my church have been helping with a mission in Mexico who have been on the waiting list for 10 years or more to get into this country legally. Why should "Sandra and Israel" be able to jump the line with no consequences?

If pulled over, most likely Sandra would be given food stamps and subsidized housing.

“Behind the steering wheel, Sandra is cautious.”

Too bad they aren’t all cautious behind the wheel. we recently had a drunk one plow into a car at a stop light doing 70 mph. slaughtered a 3-year old.

so much for a “compassionate” approach to “immigration”.

They had professional careers. Good they can move to another city in Mexico and pursue their careers there. In the US if you live in a crappy city you don’t move to Mexico.

Bull Shiite!

The Obama administration has halted deportation for all but violent criminals and even then the qualifier to get “ICE’d” is beyond ambiguous.

Her fear is unfounded but, the story line must be promoted so they can be treated like any other “American”.

I get why they come to America. Hell, everyone wants to come to America. But, there are honest immigrants who want to assimilate and become a proud American and then there are those who only want and demand a “special” status available to those who have not intention of becoming an American.

Ged duh Fug oudduh here....

Ah, the victimized illegal, always waiting for somebody to give them something, in this case citizenship they couldn’t earn on their own by following the same rules other immigrants have endured to become citizens. You want us to respect you, but you don’t want to respect our laws.

OK, if you’re an illegal (say a mexican citizen without passport) and going to survive in the shadows, let me give you several very important pointers.

1) Learn the damn language, learn to read and WRITE English. Preferably before you arrive. After you arrive, try speaking English at home until you can communicate well. Don’t speak spanish in public because it draws too much attention and pisses off little old ladies and confuses children who don’t understand. Also, you won’t be able to conduct much business (like get a real good job with benefits). Most business in America is still conducted in English. Being able to communicate in English is numero uno. Ask any illegal if you don’t believe me.

2) Find the nearest convenience store where the clerks speak spanish. They will become your source of food, medicine, legal forms and advise, lottery tickets, Western Union (lifeline to la familia back home), beer, and so on.

3) Find the nearest pawn shop where the clerks speak spanish. This will become your source of loans, tools, appliances, and so on. Stay away from the rent to own store until you are better established. And avoid loan sharks at any cost.

4) You must have some money (cash only, no checks). If you didn’t bring some money with you, wire relatives back home and ask for some deniro. If not, find something to pawn until you can establish a cash flow. Again, avoid loan sharks at any cost.

5) If you need work clothes and household items, find the nearest Church or Charity (of your religion) , Goodwill, or Salvation Army store. You must speak some mixed English here.

6) You must get a job. You may have to ask around and take any job while you search for that good job. Fellow illegals will guide to the nearest Home Depot or Wal-Mart where you can loiter and solicit day work if you are skilled. Don’t forget to bring something to eat with you. Employers usually don’t serve free lunches. If you have no skills, look for the nearest Mickey D’s or other fast food restaurant. These employers may provide lunch. Hell, you may even find enough leftovers for the whole family.

7) You must secure transportation. Don’t drive. Use public transportation. You won’t need the overhead of a license, insurance, gas, or car. If day work is secured, the employer will provide transportation to and from the work site. Otherwise, learn to walk fast and for long distances under terrible weather conditions.

8) Don’t get sick. If you do, learn where to go for medical attention, usually the nearest hospital ER.

9) Don’t get arrested.

If you follow the above advice and learn some English, you will be able to survive in America with a poverty level not much better than a college student or any one of us who are experiencing hard times (high taxes, debt, and unemployment). AND you will still be illegal. (Caveat: If you acquire significant wealth and notaritry or find a cure for cancer, we can negotiate).

All this to say. You want my birthright, given to me and earned by the blood, sweat, and tears of the immigrant forefathers who built this nation, for what. Nothing. You have broken the immigration laws and can barely survive in America. Go home and apply legally if you can follow the rules and earn your reward. And we will welcome you with the honor and respect you deserve, Amigo.

A rose by any other name....

I refuse to use any other terms except illegal alien or illegal immigrant. It is the perfect description of their status. I will not let those around me change the meaning by using the PC words. There is no feeling good about a person that violates the law with their first act of entering the country.

As for legal immigrants, they are welcome. The more highly skilled and ambitious the better. We need people that contribute to our society in legal, positive and above board ways. We do not need invaders that refuse to assimilate into American culture.

Arrest these illegal alien criminals. Seize their property, jail them and deport them.

Driving without a license = illegal
Driving without insurance = illegal
Illegally living in the USA = illegal
Being a poster chold for amnesty = all sins forgiven.

That’s exactly what most countries do. IMO, the only reason this is being tolerated is to dilute our sovereignty in order to make us weaker. Dictators can’t thrive in a country that has a strong and independent population. The only way for tyrants to take over is to smash it. Whether by ignorance or intention, this is what our government is allowing to happen and it must be stopped.
