Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. was recently censored by Arizona Republicans for being too much of a RINO and a generally irascible fellow. Sarah Palin has taken to her Facebook page to rally to the venerable war hero's defense.

My bro was the radar operator on the Oriskany aircraft carrier from whose deck he flew out - my bro said he used his daddy’s pull to get the combat mission assignment despite the fact he was not technically proficient enough to warrant getting that combat clearance. The result is well known. He’s not a maverick, he’s a self-serving gasbag who has done plenty of damage and should get tossed out of Washington before he does any more.
Everyone accepted this indebted/loyalty reason for the first couple of years. This is 2013, the hour is late for our country, and propping up socialist enabling RINOS for personal reasons looks as bad, in these dark days, as if it were for personal gain.
Getting rid of RINOS from the positions of power now trumps political favors.
When I read Sarah Palin’s Facebook post yesterday, I knew the uproar it would create here and having read the entire thread, I wasn’t disappointed.
However, I have a different take. It’s called not burning your bridges.
Suppose Palin intends to run for president. How does unnecessarily preempting McCain’s support help her campaign? If any bridge is to be burned, let McCain do it. He will be the one who comes off as small, considering Palin’s generosity towards him.
On the other hand, Palin already has the support of the tea party movement. Having McCain give her any kind of support can only help with the less supportive factions of the Republican party. At any rate, whatever happens, it won’t be Palin that started the fire that burned that bridge. IMO, she is putting McCain into the box of her choosing.
Or we might say that she knows how to speak to the discerning listener...
I think the real reason is that she’s not done with politics. Had she denounced McCain, and ran for office, she would have had to run an independent campaign devoid of any party funding.
While I disagree with Palin’s encomium of McCain, it lessens my support of her one whit.
Such is the messiness of politics and the interaction of human beings.
I actually did hear him make a semi-negative comment about Carter once.
He was giving a speech at one of the University's in Buffalo. During the Q&A someone asked his opinion of Carter and he said Carter was wrong to pardon him. when asked why he said "I am a criminal, I should have had to serve my entire term."
Horsesh*t. She didn’t rally to his defense. She made a few positive comments and then outlined, specifically, where she disagrees with McCain. This is just another attempt to marginalize what she actually said about McCain.
Right on target. It appears her loyalty to McCain is greater than her loyalty to humanity or her nation. Admittedly, I have given up on the USA as a long-dead enterprise. The tipping point was passed long ago, so perhaps personal loyalty is the only worthwhile thing left. But loyalty to this misanthropic cur is really beyond comprehension to me.
How about just saying nothing? She didn’t have to comment.
The one issue I had with Palin had always been McCain but I still supported her and hoped she had learned something. Guess not.She was always my #1 pick for prez. I may just bump her down to #2 and Cruz up a notch.
There is even loyalty among thieves. I do not understand loyalty no matter what foul deeds one may commit. There is a point when your friend does something inexcusable and you don’t follow them off the cliff. I can understand her having respect for his military service but to give the guy a free pass just because he choose you for VP? ReallY?
I will always support her, I understand why she is doing this, I disagree with her, but I understand and I figured that she would always have his back even though he never had hers..McCain is a user and trashes Conservatives on a regular basis and never once defended her after his henchmen went on TV to vilify her..but Sarah will always be loyal to him, no matter what..because I know what kind of person she is, a gracious and trustworthy person, even for a person who doesn’t deserve that trust
Palin doesn’t need to actually denounce McCain, just quietly step away and decline to comment - positively or negatively - on anything to do with McCain.
I have a different take. I have postulated that Sarah may be indebted to McCain on some personal level we know nothing about, maybe he has been an assist to her privately, like with the IRS investigating her father, something like that.
Otherwise, the bridge burning may be starting among her own followers, depressing any gains she might hope to enjoy from whatever future endorsement she could hope for from McCain. He already declined to endorse her once, back when she was making noise about a run but didn’t.
Did you actually read the article? Palin did not give McCain a free pass - not even close.
Doesn’t alter my high admiration and respect for Palin one single iota. It’s reflective of her nature... rallying, charitable, Christian. Personally, I loathe McCain, and don’t think he’s worthy of being given these “once-a-year” props that Palin offers him. But she’s guided by better spirits than I am. And she also made quite clear the (very important) issues she starkly disagrees with him.
I think Sarah has plans to draw on that account of perpetual goodwill between her and John McCain. I think within the next two years, there will come a time when Sarah is going to need John to, if not outright defend her, or her interests, then, she will need John to stand fast, and not sabotage her oncoming personal goals. Sarah has something in mind, and knows Mr. McCain might ‘forget’ how well the two of them do like and respect each other. This may be her way of saying
“Play Ball with me, Johnny, you lighten up on my Wacko Birds via your Mouths-For-Hire like Lindsay Graham and Peter King,& your little daughter too, and I will hold back openly gloating about your humiliating censure of last week, or the moments when you seem appallingly out of touch and destructive to both the Republican party and the Tea Party. Hey! How about you and young Ted Cruz having lunch next week to make up for that ugly photo of you almost bowing in front of The Devil’s Helper, aka George Soros?”
i agree with you 100% and now that his fellow POW’s are starting to speak up it seems that the ‘hero’ wasn’t as heroic as he’d like everyone to think. Now we know why he so adamantly opposed any activity to locate and repatriate MIA’s. He’s afraid os what stories they may tell.
What bridges would she have burned by keeping her yap shut? Her rush to his defense was completely unnecessary and put her on the wrong side of the fence as far as I'm concerned. I dropped her from consideration for any office when she stabbed conservatives in the back by endorsing him for the Senate in 2010. This just reinforces my decision.
