FYI for me:
“Goldson said he will campaign on the issues of tax reform, school reform and youth activities.

“I get continuously frustrated; I’ve been involved in politics for over 30 years on the local, state and federal levels,” he said. “I get so frustrated when I see my taxes rising annually and I’m not seeing my pay rise to cover the taxes.”

Goldson said the middle class is disappearing “because we don’t have folks fighting up at the Capitol for my community.”

The candidate said he plans to go to Hartford and find a way to “pay the bills” without “increasing the burden on the middle class,” something he said his opponent has not done.

On the issue of school reform, Goldson said there needs to be more parent involvement and more choice for parents when it comes to their child’s education.

He suggested a system of vouchers under which a parent is given a certain amount of money for their child’s education, and if they can find a better educational opportunity for their child, they can use the voucher at that school. He said he isn’t sure that would be the answer, but he knows the discussion would start with having parent input.

Right now, public education is a “monopoly,” he said. If the schools had more competition, they would be more innovative when it comes to providing “the kind of education our kids need to have,” he said.

“They keep talking about school reform, they keep talking about parent involvement, but they find every way they can to make sure parents are not involved in the final decision making process,” he said.

Goldson said he pulled his daughter out of New Haven Public Schools after she was going to be sent to a failing school without any other option.

In the area of experience, Goldson said he has more than Holder-Winfield.

“I put my experience up against his any day,” he said. “He sits there and votes on the party line without any objection, without any debate, without any input from his community. I will not do that.”

Goldson served as the legislative assistant to the New Haven mayor, clerk of two Connecticut legislative committees as well as her positions. He also has run for mayor.

In 2011, then an incumbent alderman, Goldson lost the Ward 30 race to City Hall-backed challenger Carlton Staggers, who won the primary.

Goldson was a frequent critic of City Hall under Mayor John DeStefano Jr. In the 2011 race, he pushed for residency requirements for city employees and proposed a program to offer financial incentives to companies that hire unemployed New Haven residents. He also worked on a citizen’s bill of rights to empower residents to address problems if the city did not respond quickly enough, and to get reimbursed later for cost of remediation.”
