Texas Turn In Shows Effective Private Purchasers (buyback)
Gun Watch ^ | 19 December, 2013 | Dean Weingarten

A recent gun turn in event at a church in Dallas shows how effective private purchasers can be in neutralizing the "guns are bad"  meme.   From the story:

“Now there’s 15 less chances there’s a tragedy, and we’re glad for that,” said the Rev. Bruce Buchanan, an associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, which has The Stewpot ministry.
This is the usual theme of gun turn in programs.  Guns are bad and should be destroyed.   However, as is happening all over the country, in the vast majority of states where private sales are not infringed on by law, there were private purchasers who brought the opposite message to the attention of readers.
As the church worked to buy guns so they could be destroyed, members of the Come and Take It Texas gun-rights group tried to buy firearms at the same site — so they could be put back into circulation.

The group said it bought four or five guns in its effort to supply firearms to the Safe Mother program, geared toward training women in need to use handguns for self-defense.
Not only are private purchasers attending these events, but they are getting organized.   Come and Take It has held a number of high profile events in Texas.

I find the reference to arming poor mothers for self defense to be particularly effect.   While not a direct reference to the Armed Citizens Project, it seems to share the same goal: arm citizens, reduce crime.

Those who wish to disarm the citizenry realize that this sort of event is a net loser for them.   From a seattlepi.com article, this email came to light in a freedom of information act requestSAF recently received $38,000 because of the cities withholding of the information.
“I wish you guys would … have talked to us/CeaseFire about this before moving forward,” Fascitelli said in an email to King County Executive Dow Constantine and a Mayor’s Office staffer. “The overwhelming research shows that buybacks generally don’t work well and are a waste of resources and are mocked by the NRA.
This does not stop the anti-freedom activists from holding turn in events in states where private sales are infringed on, such as the one in California that netted an an STG-44.   It is another reason to oppose the road to registration that anti-freedom activists describe as "universal background checks".

Closest rifle on table is an 1870’s Swiss Vetterli. The first repeating bolt action rifle made (this is the carbine version).

They last made the rim fire 10.4x38 ammo for it over 70 years ago.

I would have given them more than $50 for just the rear sight, as I’m needing one.

Good thing that got that dangerous monster off the streets.

I took the picture just for the Vetterli. Breaks your heart to see collectibles be destroy just for propaganda reasons. They did get $100 for it at this turn in (the picture was taken in Phoenix this spring).

“particularly effect” should be “particularly effective”

How many of those guns were bought up by illegals residing in the sanctuary state of texas?

The majority of texas is bought and paid for by mexico. The state that bought you LBJ, GWB, and doing the jobs Americans won’t do for slave wages, has no room to talk.

The dirty little secret is that gringos are moving in droves out of texas into the midwest, because the mexicans have pretty much taken over the state. If things are so good in texas, how come so many former texans are moving into the upper midwest?

What I read is that droves of people are moving into Texas. Not sure that we can easily determine what culture they are mostly from, but Texas seems much more active on closing the border than California.

“This does not stop the anti-freedom activists from holding turn in events in states where private sales are infringed on”

Actually, they had to cancel on of these turn in in Boulder because the new CO law doesn’t allow the church to buy guns without an FFL there continuously doing background checks on their buyer.

Yes, I had a chuckle about that one. Still not good, but it is funny to see the opposition “shoot” themselves in the foot.

I'm a fan of Vetterli's. They get a bad rap for being poorly designed, but that's because people compare them to designs that are 20 years newer (during rapid development).

When the Swiss Vetterli was introduced, it was the finest, most deadly military rifle in the world, and it stayed that way for 15 years. I would 20 times rather be armed with a Swiss Vetterli than a Trapdoor Springfield, or an 1871 Mauser, which is a fair comparison.

Yes, the 71/84 Mauser was a great gun, but it was introduced 18 years after the Vetterli. Only the Winchester lever guns could match it for rate of fire (it used the Winchester tube system).

I think the perception problem mainly stems from the Italians, who could only a afford to purchase a single shot version, and then went through multiple upgrades, still fielding the rifle in a greatly modified version during WWI 40 years after it was introduced, during the most rapid period of rifle development in history. Don't ever fire an Italian M1870/87/15 with the barrel/chamber insert for 6.5x52 Carcano round.

For their part, the Swiss replaced their Vetterli with the 1889 Schmidt Rubin, which was also arguably the best rifle in the world when it was introduced. A 12 round removable magazine with a semi-smokeless 7.5x53 cartridge was way ahead of its time. As a side note, the Italian Vetterli was a centerfire, the Swiss Vetterli was a rim fire. The Swiss guns can be shot by with an easy bolt conversion, resized .348 Win or 8mm Lebel brass, black powder, and soft lead.

I find the 1860 - 1898 rifles and handguns fascinating. As you mentioned, it is a time of very rapid innovation in firearms, primarily due to the invention of brass cases and smokeless powder. Almost nothing really new was put forward after 1911, just improvements on existing designs. I will give Herr Glock a nod, as his use of the reinforced composite frame, with the innovative “safe action” and many of the best of modern design features built into the pistol, is a significant step. But if you look at the basic lockup and function, it is essentially an improved 1911 (tilt barrel lock) design. You might say it is a hammerless Highpower with a “safe action” trigger and a composite frame.

I wish they would hold some of these buybacks here in Austin, so I could have a ‘shot’ at finding some good deals.

Maybe you could sponsor one, with the priviso that you are able to go through them and “outbid” those that are especially of historical value, guaranteeing that they will be kept “off the street”. Others could be offered to dealers with the proceeds going to a worthy charity...
