Actor Richard Dreyfuss: "The NRA is Not the Enemy, They Should Be Thought of as Heroes"

Katie Pavlich | Nov 22, 2013

Appearing on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight earlier this week, actor Richard Dreyfuss made some refreshing comments about the National Rifle Association, saying that they are best group to turn to for solutions on gun violence while noting they are experts and were founded in order to education people about firearms.

"I don't think the NRA is a villian," Dreyfuss said. "I think we should turn this over to the people who are expert at this and the original mandate of the NRA was to train responsible gun ownership and the NRA should handle it. They should train excellence in gun ownership."

He did take a dig at "people killing weapons," but instead of suggesting a ban on them, he suggested they be held in an armory controlled by the NRA, not the government.

"The NRA should be thought of, or think of themselves, as heroes and take care of this problem," Dreyfuss said.

I'm glad to see this in the news but....

Why is it that Hollywierdos suddenly turn up with Conservative views in the twilight of their lives when their career is just about over?

I think it goes to the theory that any news is good news for failing movie stars. They will say or do anything to get their name back in the news.

They aren’t really conservative views. He wants “people killing guns” to be held in an NRA Armory. That’s a tiny bit better than a government armory but still a pretty bad idea.

With friends like these...here's his full quote:

“The original mandate of the NRA was to train responsible gun ownership and the NRA should handle it. They should train excellence in gun ownership. They should create the short list of guns that are allowed at home. And every other gun that they say is legal like people-killers and nuclear-tipped semi-automatics should be held in armories owned and controlled by the NRA. Not the government.”

I want a nuclear-tipped semiautomatic!

Yes, when you watch the whole video Dreyfuss says: The Second Amendment is ‘ambiguous’” NRA should create short list of ‘allowed’ guns at home.” “The rest should be locked up in armory’s.”

So actually Town Hall should be so anxious to say that this is a win for gun owners.

And in other news:

Army Giving Up Stopping Power for ‘Green’ Bullets

The Army is switching from lead bullets in many small caliber arms to “environmentally friendly” rounds in 2014, even through the lead bullets are tried and true while the stopping power of the “green” bullets is already being questioned.

The Daily Caller reports that the Army switched to a “green” round for its 5.56 mm ammo in 2010—these are the bullets used in an MP4 or an AR-15.

This ammo is referred to as an “Enhanced Performance Round,” even though a Fox News report raises suspicions over just how enhanced the new round will be. They quote “ballistics experts” who say “the new rounds won’t be substantially more deadly” than the old ones. Nevertheless, the Army is pressing on and making the 7.62 mm bullet “environmentally friendly” by 2014 as well.

Hey Dick, I’m excellent at gun ownership. You’re gonna need a bigger brain Dick.

Actually this explains Dick's opinions about gun control:

'There's no shame in having depression': Richard Dreyfuss talks candidly about his lifelong battle with bipolar disorder

By Bobbie Whiteman

PUBLISHED: 00:05 EST, 12 November 2013 | UPDATED: 05:03 EST, 12 November 2013

He may be a successful actor with numerous hits and an Oscar under his belt, but Richard Dreyfuss spent many years on a roller-coaster ride of extreme highs and devastating lows as he battled bipolar disorder.

The Jaws star shared his experiences about his lifelong struggle with the condition at the Hope for Depression Research Foundation lunch in New York on Thursday...

the original mandate of the NRA was to train responsible gun ownership...

Perhaps Mr. Dreyfuss should consider that the "original mandate" of the 2nd Amendment was for the Government to be balanced by an armed citizenry sufficiently capable of resisting a tyranical govt (if it came to it).

Consolidating arms into a locked armory that the govt can easily seize sort of defeats the entire original mandate of the 2nd Amendment.

I'm going to be overly charitable and presume Mr. Dreyfuss has a few functioning brain-cells and is not being intellectually dishonest on purpose.

Which is just as bad as any ban.

While researching my genealogy I found a letter from one of my distant ancestors (Ethan Allen clan) complaining that the Colonial Governor had ordered that British issued weapons be turned over to an armory for safe keeping. Most of the local frontier farmers were too poor to afford to buy a gun and the weapons issued to them as British reserve troops were their only source of defense at home.

What Dreyfuss proposed is to have a limited list of guns "allowed" to be stored at home, and all other guns must be stored at armories owned by the NRA.

This is the first step that the UK did with their handguns - you can keep them at a licensed gun club, shoot them at that same licensed gun club, but cannot take them home. Then a few years later they said "nope, can't have them anymore" and they all were conveniently located at these gun clubs where they can easily be picked up en masse and the owners blocked from obtaining them.

No, thank you. I'll lock them up in my own safe, in my own home.

Reminds me of Fort Hood massacre where unarmed soldiers were murdered.

When I was in Vietnam many support units had their weapons and ammo locked in Conex containers only accessible by the Armorer for fear of accidental discharges, which some occurred.

Much of that policy changed after the first Vietcong attacks on military bases.

Watch the film “From Here to Eternity” written by actual 25th Infantry Division veteran, James Jones and see how weapons and ammunition were locked up and not ready to repel the Japanese air attacks.
