Cancer Warriors Ping - CAN ANYONE HERE HELP A LUNG CANCER PATIENT WITH ADVICE?

The message below is from Trebb:

Please add me. Step son has inoperable lung cancer - small cell. Currently on 3rd round of chemo and they have added radiation. Plans are for about 30-35 more rounds of radiation over next 10 weeks. Doctors original prognosis was:

- No treatment = possible 6 month.

- Treatment = 25% chance of between 6 months and 2 years (never saw anyone go beyond 2 years for this type/stage of development).

Daniel James Frazier is 48 years old and his Mom (my wife) is suffering a lot as she watches her son waste away and take the hits from the treatment. Ruby is his primary care giver and I take care of his household tasks that need done. I'm trying to stay a bit more emotionally detached in order to keep from becoming emotionally worn out so I can be there when Ruby needs someone to lean on.

Working on financials - he's broke and his insurance runs out at end of Dec as he can no longer work. We footed his catastrophic cap and other expenses to get him engaged in treatment but cannot afford to totally foot the bill for COBRA, etc., going into the next year.

SS office originally denied disability then said it was approved, but first check not coming until May.

Medicaid won't kick in until current insurance expires - working to try to get pre-set with them.

Lawyer friend says we need to let current insurance expire and not sign anything on his behalf - may be able to fast-track Medicaid for us.

Other patients and caregivers claim that the hospital;s/doctors cannot stop coverage if/when insurance expires - some receptionists have expressed different views. Going to hit the financial aid section of one hospital to see if options exist.

Anyone who went through the financial end and who has info that might be useful as far as options and experiences with the options asked to ping me so we can try to ensure coverage for his needs.

Ruby has extensive set of friends to help bolster her mentally/emotionally/spiritually , but I'm open to anyone with any potentially uplifting message.

God Bless.

MD Anderson in Houston claims to not deny treatment for any reason.

Sounds like time is running out. Hope the man is a Christian. If not, someone needs to share the Gospel with him.

The Best kind of “radiation” treatment is Proton treatment. My husband is a 4 1/2 year survivor of Non small cell inoperable lung cancer. Proton treatment is not just regular radiation by another name like cyber knife etc. It is NOT equal in any way. Sometimes they treat non small cell, but it depends on the stage etc. MD Anderson has an on site Proton treatment facility, but we used http://www.floridaproton.org/. There were only 6 proton treatment centers in the US when he had his treatments. There may be a few more now, but they are not all equal either. Contact them. In Jacksonville, Fl they are just awesome. Freepmail me if you have any questions.
