It take a gun to stop a crazy with a gun and until someone gets there and locates the killer, the madman will continue to kill.

The FBI is now saying yesterday's shootings were caused by a lone gunman armed with a single shotgun. The murderer armed himself with the handgun from an armed security guard had shot but there was no AR-15 used as incorrectly reported.he s

“Not sure that everybody on post should be carrying firearms with live ammo when not in a combat zone is a good solution to on base shootings”

Many officers (active and retired) I know are fairly anti-gun and supportive of more govt control.

I think they’ve been trained to consider the average person as being incompetent.

An armed society is a polite society-—been proved time and again. It certainly works in my neighborhood which is as peaceful as anyplace in the country. EVERYBODY knows I’m armed to the teeth and even the non-shooters will say they’d rather have me around as-is than un-armed.

Back in the 1980’s guns were allowed on Air Force bases but only in private residences like base housing but never in dorms. Those in dorms needed to store their firearms at the base armory. Never was a loaded weapon allowed on base at any time.

“Because Bush wasn’t nearly as “conservative” as everyone touted him to be. I tried to point this out a couple of times, but was shouted down.”

You had my support. Bush loves this country, which separates him from Clinton and Obama, but Bush made some terrible decisions, like TARP, PATRIOT Act, DHS, etc.

Had a guy in my dorm bring his firearms in to clean them. Boy did he regret that decision.

NOAA, the weather people, has a SWAT team.

“Not sure that everybody on post should be carrying firearms with live ammo when not in a combat zone is a good solution to on base shootings”

How is on-base different than any other neighborhood? We trust them to fight for our country but don’t trust them to own their own weapons?

I had a shotgun in my dorm since it was too late to get it into the armory. 1st sarge just asked me to get it to the armory as soon as I got off work. That was it.

“I think they’ve been trained to consider the average person as being incompetent.”

We have them on FR, too. One idiot army officer claimed there would be massive deaths since they are incompetent and would trip over their slings and have discharges. Of course, those same soldiers under his command and off base and on patrol would be professionals capable of handling those same weapons.

Sounds like somebody else’s army to me. My 1960’s Marine Corps allowed us to take our weapons home with us if we wanted to practice, hunt, target compete, etc,. They wouldn’t let us draw extra ammo so we had to buy our own for non-duty shooting. Private firearms weren’t controlled in any way-—an extension of smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, I guess. We used to occasionally trade private guns on base and I still have a couple I bought from sailors.

And by the way, if I ever have to march to defend my rights I’ll be carrying the same kind of rifle I was carrying when I took the oath to defend——Semper Fi.

I agree that letting people know there are sheepdogs out there is very important. I just think that we do ourselves a disservice by carrying concealed. Yeah, it keeps us safer but we lose so many teachable moments. Most people grow up in an urban environment where guns are not necessarily a way of life. The more they’re demystified the less their perceived as a threat by those who are merely unfamiliar.

In this case the swat team responded and nearly took out everyone in the common room.

That is not my experience but what ever happens on the base falls into some officers area of responsibility and the base commander owns it all.

Too much can go wrong when 10,000 to 35,000 people are carrying loaded firearms around the base. Not everybody has good judgement. Everyone does not follows proper procedure. Not everyone has impulse control.

Not anti-gun. Used to be long range pistol silhouette shooter. Hand load my own ammo. Have enough firearms here to feel adequately armed. But I trust me and I trust you however as the numbers increase someone can’t be trusted. Otherwise there would be no post stockade, brig, or penal barracks at Ft. Leavenworth.

We should be protecting our troops not creating more problems for them.

“After that you bring them back to the States and tell them it is not safe for them to have firearms in their possession.”

The problem is that they should not need to repel or neutralize an attack when not in a combat zone. The security and protection needs to be increased so that our bases are safe for our troops and their dependents. The last 2 attacks were from properly credentialed actors that escaped scrutiny before perpetrating their attacks.

There were no shootings on military bases.

I don’t understand why there aren’t armed guards on military bases, it’s a frigging MILITARY BASE. Why aren’t there guns?

That all stopped after 9/11/2001 and most bases had gate guards at the main entrance. We had the state marksmanship team leader stopped at the gate and they inspected his car. They all knew him and he just happened to be the "random vehicle" inspected. Just what the hell did they expect to find?

Not having locked and loaded firearms in the hands of all base personnel is not new. What is new is that people are killing people on military bases. Security and protection needs to be increased.

“Security and protection needs to be increased.”

Not possible. It would take half of us to protect the other half. If we don’t trust people with weapons then what are they doing in uniform or on a military base in the first place. We give people security clearances based on all kinds of personal information and background checks but then we still don’t really trust them? Our founding father trusted the people. When did we get away from that?
