No Country For Young Men: Skyrocketing Healthcare Costs, Part-time Jobs, Declining Real Income
Confounded Interest ^ | 08/26/2013 | Anthony B. Sanders

As we begin a new semester at George Mason University, it is an appropriate time to review the miserable lot for young men in the US. And young women as well.

Let’s start with healthcare premiums under the “affordable” healthcare act. According to a study by the American Action Forum, healthcare premiums for young people will rise dramatically, particularly for young men.

Homeownership for the young? And USA Today found that homeownership rates are falling most for people aged 25-34.

And 16-19 unemployment rates remain appallingly high. Higher than Detroit’s unemployment rate! And much higher than the national average.

Real median income for the young? The real median income growth for 15-24 age group is negative. And the growth rate for 25-34 is declining.

Real household income growth remains NEGATIVE.

Then of course there is the massive student debt problem placing handcuffs on college graduates. However, this is a self-inflicted wound by choosing to borrow rather than work and save.

And the economy keeps cycling downwards like the alien signals in “Independence Day.”

75% of jobs created this year are part-time, not full-time.

This is indeed “No country for young men.” And its not so grand for young women either.

It’s the Obama way. It was his plan all along.

Then again it’s the young who turned out in droves to put this guy over the top twice, so I’m having trouble getting my give-a-damn engaged.

Obamacare is killing this country.

And the lack of an engaged opposition party fighting against the kenyan’s policies and assaults is going to bury it.

Worse is majority of people are enabling him by voting and shilling for him.

Move to Annapolis, Maryland. There are TONS of jobs needing help in the minimum wage area. I always wonder about kids and so called unemployment. I believe it has to do more with parents giving their children money all the time then kids needing to get a job to buy things. That is my experience in Annapolis anyway.

I, too, believe Obamacare is leading to a lot of part time jobs, etc.

However, when they give statistics for this age range, what they say is happening, isn’t happening to the young people I know through our son, and DIL.

Son is 25, DIL 23, they hang out with a bunch of young married couples, and the core group have been friends since they were teens, spouses got added in later :)

They all have jobs, good jobs. If it didn’t start out as a great job, they’ve taken entry level jobs and worked their way up through the ranks to higher positions.

All have college education of some sort...some AAs, some BAs, and some Graduate degrees. Many own homes, bought when prices were low and interest rates ridiculously low, most don’t have children yet, but a few do.

Of all my son and DIL’s friends, I don’t know any who don’t have full time jobs, unless they’re still finishing college, and are working part time because of that.

I believe the stats, but maybe that’s from another area of the country or something...I just can’t figure it out.

The one common factor is they became friends in their early teens through our youth ministry at church, and most were homeschooled and used the Dual Credit program at our local Community College. So maybe it’s a work ethic thing, or just a regional phenomenon.

Wow, three posts blaming the young. Not bad.

Boomers voted for Obama too. White young folks actually voted against Obama, so don’t blame us.

I couldn’t get hired for minimum wage. ‘overqualified’ bs. Just because they are ‘needing help’ doesn’t mean they are hiring.

My perception is that most youts want to spend 5 or 6 yrs on a credit funded vacation (aka college) and then head off to the “life of Julia”.

Much different than 40 yrs ago when I was that age.

Exactly. They voted for socialism, not caring about the negative consequences of it. And now that they are experiencing them first-hand, they probably don't even realize it was what they voted for.

These are generalities, please don't take them personally. Women voted for Obama over Romney, but I don't take it personally when someone talks about how women voted stupidly. I know 'they' did, but 'I' didn't.

It is true that Obama won the under 29 vote, by 60 to 37. Not even close. And Obama lost the over 50 vote. So looking at just age, the younger set did vote him in.

You're right - looking at race, whites voted against Obama 59 to 39. That's huge. And a reason why we don't need illegals legalized. Hispanics voted for Obama in the 70% range - we can just kiss any conservative ever being elected again goodbye if they become legal. (Not to mention, rewarding criminal behavior.)

Your post alludes to the demographic problem we face.
Every year 2.5 million (mostly white, majority R voting) people die and are replaced by (mostly minority, heavily D voting) people.

What region are you in? Somehow I don’t expect you’re in the Northeast or on the West Coast.

Not just Whites - but young white people did the same. The problem is that there’s not enough of us, and that Boomers split. There’s way more Boomers than everyone else.

Florida...West Coast, Tampa Bay area

Last night my son and DIL were here for dinner, and I posed the question to them again. They know of no one in their age group, 20-28 would be the range, who does not have a job. Like I said, some part time, but those are by choice as they’re going to school and working part time at Chick Fil A or Starbucks.

Good for them. Up here in the Northeast marrying so young is the exception rather than the rule and many middle to upper-middle income families expect to support them, if need be, through internships and grad school.

I suspect your kiddos and their friends are better off for being expected to achieve adulthood before age 35.
