The tornado-devastated town of Moore, Okla., had complained in February about regulatory delays from state and federal agencies that were preventing it from getting money for its county-wide tornado shelter rebate program.

"The city's safe room rebate program is still 'on hold,' with not a lot changed from our update of last May [2012]," a statement posted on the City of Moore website said.

"Our county-wide Hazard Mitigation Plan still has not been approved by the state and FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency]...

"There were changes to the federal requirements for this plan that occurred while our contractor was writing the document. He has had to rewrite it.

"We've found that the FEMA requirements and their interpretations seem to be a constantly moving target, more so with the new wrinkles. We're still working out various wording changes..."

Well at least they made sure no flying guns would be hitting kids in the heads at the schools.

Taxpayers do NOT owe you a tornado room, or a free rebuild of your beach house, or etc.
Maybe not, but the government can bury you in so many regulations as to make it nigh impossible to do it yourself.

Yeah, and *that* part needs to be fixed.

Exactly and FEMA is one of those things we're forced to pay for as they take an ever larger role and larger bite to support themselves.

For instance, the flood zones in my area were expanded a few years ago and my house was suddenly in a flood zone that didn't exist. I don't have to buy flood insurance but we all pay higher rates because insurance companies are forced to set aside a certain amount in the event of floods.

Meanwhile, I can't afford the preventative measure of removing a big ole cottonwood that towers over the house because of the money I don't have due to taxes and regulations plus the cost the tree service would pass on to me.

Government is paralyzing America.

Ah yes,the two wrongs make a right defense...I’m living in Oklahoma, and I couldn’t care less of the ramblings of those opportunist douchebags right now. Let’s find survivors and mourn our losses first.

My comment was not justifying the second wrong but highlighting the first.

I would hesitate to blame the failures of socialism with the failure of the local taxpayers to fund this themselves. I don’t expect Oklahomans to pay for my flood or avalanche risks. I don’t expect them to demand that I pay for their tornado risks.

Obama (peace be upon him) hasn’t had time to fix FEMA yet, it’s still messed up from when Bush was president.

I’m surprised the Dems haven’t floated the idea yet that the buildings weren’t reinforced because of the sequester.
