He said the deployment aimed to bolster peace and friendship in the region. "The destroyer is there to meet those who want to jeopardize the security of surrounding nations," he said, without elaborating.....

The build and launch it in a land locked body of water? That is about as smart as a screen door on a submarine.

There is oil under the Caspian Sea. Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan all claim it. Iran wants it.

They assume that the Russians don’t have the ability to take it out.

At 1500 tons displacement, this is a small frigate or large corvette. It is no destroyer by today’s standard.

Makes a pretty target though. Our Navy will have fun with that one.

From the picture it has an Oto-Melara 76mm gun (which looks big on the “destroyer”, but looks pretty small on our Perry-class Frigates) and a box launcher for a single Standard-type missile (Standards can actually be used in a surface-to-surface role).

Why? Let the Russkies have some fun. It’s in the Caspian Sea.

This is like their “terrifying flying stealth boats” from a couple years back.
It will make a fine bathtub boat for the Caspian Sea.
Assuming it doesn’t meet with an “unfortunate accident” first or even exists at all!

No it's not. This is a destroyer:

Actually no. Russia has a canal system that enables it to move moderate size warships in and out of the Caspian (unlike the Iranian ship which is stuck there)

Currently the Russian Caspian Sea Flotila has 2 light frigates, each about the size of the Iranian one but a lot meaner. Plus 9 smaller missile ships/boats.
