Jennifer Carroll was the first female elected Lt. Governor of Florida and the firs African-American elected statewide in 2010. For the past two years, you couldn't find her picture or any articles on her in the media, including a total blackout during the campaign of 2010 when her running mate Rick Scott was elected governor. But now that she's mired in some kind of controversy, the media comes out of the woodwork to cover her. Think it has something to do with the fact that she's a black Republican? Of course, the media is only interested in Republican scandals.

The loathsome Humane Society of the US gives only 1% of its revenue to actually helping animals, but it isn’t being covered by a quivering media. Perhaps because Carroll is a black, Republican, military veteran? Nah... that would be unfair. /S

Some kind of controversy? $290 million ain't chicken feed.

Here's what the article says:
Carroll's resignation was announced Wednesday, one day after she gave her resignation letter to Scott. His chief of staff, Adam Hollingsworth, said her resignation was spurred by an investigation into the Allied Veterans of the World.

Officials from that non-profit internet cafe company were recently arrested on racketeering charges. The owner was arrested Tuesday in connection to allegations that he made $290 million after supplying illegal gambling software in Florida and claiming the games' proceeds would benefit a veterans group. Authorities also interviewed Carroll. Carroll's ties to the company were questioned when she was in the Legislature when she proposed a bill that would benefit Internet cafes.

The rule for Democrats is “innocent until proven guilty.” (Sometimes it’s “guilty, who cares?”). I think she deserves the presumption of innocence.

Actually, it is hard to see from either article how she is actually involved. She had a public relations firm that had a contract with the organization.

PR firms don’t have anything to do with what the organizations actually do, nor would they likely have known there was anything illegal going on.

The yahoo article says she was involved in “another scandal”. That “other scandal” was a staffer who claimed she caught Carroll fooling around with another woman at work. Nothing was ever proved, and the staffer was charged with leaking phone records. But then Carroll was caught in another “scandal” because she suggested lesbians weren’t good-looking.

That is what passes for “scandal” if you are a republican — you get too friendly with a lesbian worker at your office, and make some untoward comment.

As a republican, you pretty much have to resign when anybody suggests anything, because the media will use “guilt by association” to destroy everything you have worked on.

Upon further reading, the accusations against her do look quite flimsy.

In the case of the “Veterans organization”, there didn’t even really seem to be “accusations”, just that the group itself is under suspicion, and she once had a relationship with them through a PR firm. She was questioned, but that doesn’t mean she is under suspicion, it is reasonable to think that a PR firm might have information useful to building a case against a company they worked for.

She may not be personally involved in any illegal activities, just have to wait and see.

I've always wondered why she has always stayed in the background, did Scott choose her just to have a token black on the ticket?

At risk of getting flamed I've got to say that although I agree with many of Scott's decisions I don't think he was the best choice for conservatives. Maybe it's my general skepticism about South Florida republicans but I don't consider Scott to be reliable.

Her departure from his administration together with his appointment of Corey to persecute Zimmerman will cost him a lot of Republican votes.

He may lose and lose big —
