You want to see insanely driven parents, enter the world of high school sports.
Or Little League.
I wish I had the knowledge back then that Mike Matheny had when he wrote this "open letter to Little League parents," and the guts to lay it out there for the parents of my team's players:
the only exploitation I see happening to children is the environmental indoctrination the kids are subjected to from prekindergarten upwards.
Sometimes I catch part of the local sports wacko talk show as I flip to something else worth listening to. What times I listen, it is sad to hear all these guys call up and obsess to apparently no end about some junior high or high school player at some nowhere school.
Going to some sports type bars every once in a great while with friends it is sad and funny at the same time seeing so many older fat and a few morbidly obese guys go bananas over every play and replay. I am hardly the picture of slim and trim but am working on it but I don’t go bonkers like that since sports means nothing to me.
What amazes me is that the local news will devote more time to high school sports reporting than almost anything else.
I don’t think my mom or dad ever went to one of my brothers’ little league games - they rode their bikes to the field, played their games, and came home and told us if they won or lost. This was in the 60’s. That was a great time to grow up.
I don’t think there’s anything much worse than “Toddlers and Tiaras”. In my mind, those little girls (and now they have boys’ pageants) are the worst.
At least athletics can give the players some good exercise and fresh air!
There is no reason that I can see for 4, 5, 6r yr old little girls doing bumps and grinds, and wiggling their rear ends at an audience full of adults. Even some of the costumes they wear are very suggestive.
I nearly break my arm to change the channel when I come across one of those shows.
Sexual exploitation of little girls is the same as the values sportsmanship and other things little league teaches?
Ummmkay, gotcha.
I have to agree 100% with your comment. You’re right, this is NOTHING worse than these child “pageants.” To compare them with Little League is a bit much.
Are some “sport parents” over the top sometimes? Sure, but nothing is as low as watching some fat mother with the IQ of 75 dress her 6 year old daughter up like a prostitute, put enough make up and hair spray on her so that she looks more like she’s 26, force, force her to dance provocatively in front of like minded fools and pedophiles, and then bring said daughter to tears of anguish from the tremendous pressure of it all.
These people should be put away.
Speaking of Little League.
Who the hell decided that Neuvo Laredo would be a good place for the LL World Series?
I don’t know what you’re referring to but the Series I’, watching now is in Williamsport, PA.
Might have been some sort of playoff game. I wasn’t paying close attention but I did catch the fact that both teams playing had lost their first games.
News here this week was the local school board called a special meeting to fire the football coach, one of the board members was mad because his son wasn’t getting to play.....so they voted 4 to 3 to fire the coach. Most likely the kid isn’t the best player but hey, his dad is on the school board :)
Referring to out of control parents.
Ditto for me, that was the 1970s. The only parents who ever showed up were the coaches.
I remember seeing a documentary about it about ten years ago, the whole subculture struck me as *extremely* creepy.
It's a show from the deepest pits of Hell, any parent that does that to their kid should be arrested for Child Abuse.

Though I must admit, this was pretty funny

Correction: the local news will devote more time to high school football reporting than almost anything else.
Signed: proud mom of a high school cross country runner.
Hit the nail squarely on the head. Played sports growing up. I witnessed two incident involving a moronic parent (dads coaching baseball. Kids were on the team. Ugly scene).
I have read about overbearing parents who live through their children, and situations which involve moronic behavior, but the worse offender in the systematic exploitation of children is the public education systems.
When this first became a big deal, I never can wrap my head around it. It just seems so wrong.
I’ve only seen a few trailers for the show. I’ve never watched it, and recently returned my cable box because of the lack of things worth watching, but that was a pretty funny parody.
It boggles the mind for me. Here the local AM station news always seems to have some space for some HS sports action.
Aren’t there enough dedicated sports radio channels out there? There is at least one here that is a sister station I think to the AM news one.
That was funny despite Tom (tolerable) and Opie Cunningham (who I really can’t stand).
I like Tom when he sticks to doing comedy.
