An air of hostility now broods between the state of Arizona and the United States government. In the parent/child relationship between the two -- as upheld by the Supreme Court in its recent rulings on Arizona's immigration law -- Arizona finds itself in an unenviable position with a choice to make: 1) back down from a bullying federal government and fall into line; 2) wait out the problem and hope for a friendlier administration as soon as 2013; or 3) consider the unthinkable: find a path to secede from the United States.

At least from McCain.
secede and wake this country up
All 50 States should secede
From my understanding, Arizona cannot sucede from the U.S. legally. What they can do is attempt it and it may wake up the rest of the states in a big way. As well as the people.
I can’t imagine how all these states think they could seceed when they take so much money from the Federal Government. Very few states would survive on their own.
Juan McCain can secede any time!
I think it would be better to have Washington DC secede.
Arizona could call up the militia (its able-bodied young manhood) & deal with the invasion.
Let us not be so quick to dissolve the Union, simply because the Federal Government has temporarily fallen into anti-ethnic American hands.
William Flax
How can a state that was created by the federal government claim sovereignty? This whole secession business is riciculous.
Succession is illegal and treasonous.
Texas v. White (1869)
Unless the "red states" can somehow band together and form a federal union themselves.
If at first you don’t secede......
If a state were to secede, the Federal governments legal system really wouldn’t matter anymore. What are they gonna do, sue them in the World Court? Would that matter if they didn’t recognize them as well?
Arizona is landlocked and would die quickly.
The only way to win this fight is united.
Surivive? I believetThey would probably thrive. I think most people would be surprised at how much they did not miss the extra government BS which that money buys.
All 50 Governors need to form an alliance and fire fedzilla.
Yes yes, 50 states should secede and send illegals to remaining 7 states.
Such is our situation ... trying our souls.
It's "Give me Liberty or give me death" time ... again.
Total seccession is not necessary. All a state has to do is just stop taking money from the Feds and support itself. Then nullify the Fed laws it is unhappy with. That is more of a passive agressive approach and makes it much harder for the Feds to fight agains’t. If you get 10 or so states that do this at the same time and also just stop sending in the alchohol, tobacco and gas taxes to the Feds the central govt would shut down in a couple of weeks from lack of funds.
I think you're confusing AZ with Kalifornia, my FRiend.
AZ makes a lot more than it takes.
Who was the Roberts in the 5-3 Texas v. White case?
It technically is landlocked, but I can easily think the Mexicans would give them access on the Colorado River to the Sea of Cortez...
The actually is one way. The states could call for a Constitutional Convention, then pass an amendment allowing for secession.
Other than that, impossible. As someone once wrote, the Civil War made it "settled law" that states cannot secede from the Union as the Constitution stands now.
And for what it's worth, I'd love to see the states at least talk about calling for a Convention. Maybe that would scare the Fed's into respecting the 10th amendment.
They also have the option of nullification.
As for the Federal tax situation, AZ is in the same boat as all the other states and that is they rely on FedGov-zilla to properly distribute tax monies that they (the States) have sent them. Few people realize that a portion of their local property taxes are sent to Washington to be redistributed by the DoEd (after they skim their “administrative costs”!)
The best route would be to tell FedGov-zilla to collect the taxes on their own as they would no longer forward any monies to them.
“All 50 States should secede.”

No thanks.
I want NOTHING to do with Leftists.
NO conversation.
No “exchange of ideas”.
No cocktails.
And least of all, not even a single infectious germ contaminant, of their consummately destructive ideology.
I know it's only Monday, but that could be post of the week.
No. The U.S. is not the parent of its member states.
If Obama is reelected, yes.
The only way Obammy would let Arizona leave would be for it to join Mexico.
many states pay out $2 for every dollar they get back.
The money that comes in, in large goes to waste, such as welfare, or the well connected.
There is absolutely no reason for Arizona to even consider the thought of seceding. This is a distortion or contamination of perspective.
Arizona citizens and most citizens of the United States are conservative and form the core of what it means to be US citizens. Those of the left should be concerned they have separated into their own nation because they cannot live by the Constitution and traditional structures of the United States. It is not Arizona’s problem, it is the problem of people, many in gov’t, who don’t “fit” in a free and advanced society. It is the left who are on the path to seceding. Arizona is just fine and need do nothing but push back.
“JOIN OR DIE.”
If at first you don’t secede, try, try again...................
Section. 4. The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.
They are sovereign
I’m all for a nationwide state driven tax revolt. Hell I’ve long supported cutting our own state of Michigan off and making us fix our own problems.
I am amused at all of this talk about secession being “illegal.” Illegal in what sphere? Besides, what is justifiable is more important than any concept of legality. I confess that I am a bit surprised at some of the readiness of others on here to quietly back down.
“How can a state that was created by the federal government claim sovereignty?”
Is this facetious? I hope so.
In 1776 it was also illegal for the 13 colonies to secede from Great Briton. Then in 1861, 11 states did and it cost 600,000 lives to "Save the Union". I would guess that if Arizona did atempt to secede, there would be hell to pay. Both in the courts and in the field. That said, I would be more than happy to live in the Republic of Arizona.
The Feds would cut off vital services like Airport Landing Routes. They threatened Texas with a no-fly-zone a few years ago when they were in the process of kicking the TSA to the curb.
Show me the phrase or words in the constitution that says a state can secede from union. The states agreed to a union when they rejected the articles of confederation and adopted the constitution in 1787. This issue was settled in 1865. Of course I’m serious. If you think you can have a country where any state can leave and set up an independent country because some nuts in the state legislature decided they’re being oppressed, then you have some serious faults in logic. What does the word union mean to you? The idea that individual states can secede (and supposedly rejoin) willy-nilly is preposterous. PREPOSTEROUS!!! How’s that for being serious.
I can’t say about Arizona, but I am beginning to think Florida secedeing might not be a bad idea.
I would love to see the states divided. I am sick of liberals. Give them their own country and conservatives can have theirs. Independents can move to Canada.
I was looking for the like button! I was thinking the same thing. But, we would still be in the same fix.
