Things often overlooked by preppers
Prudence Not Paranoia ^ | 6/1/12 | rknecht

More Americans are joining the ranks of “preppers” every day.

My last two columns discussed the growing trend of people taking steps to ensure they can be as self-sufficient as possible over the short term in; the event of a natural or manmade catastrophe.

Preppers aren’t necessarily members of groups with a political agenda.

They’re just concerned citizens and sometimes include groups of families, neighborhoods, churches, civic organizations and even entire states.

“Normally I don’t like jumping into other people’s arguments...Did that make sense?”

Well jump right in :), though I would think of it as discussion rather than argument. And yes, everything you wrote makes sense. I agree with you. As for side effects, I have gotten nose bleed from overdosing on aspirin, so though I think aspirin is ‘safe’, I limit its use.

Overall, we use no prescription meds and few OTC. We are into ‘natural’ healing and have stuff we use as needed.

We even have stuff (alpha lipoic acid, selenium, silymarin) that can regenerate a liver that has been severely damaged. We have DMSO, and DMSO will stop a stroke...it dissolves bloodclots. Vitamin D3 was mentioned earlier by someone in this thread as being good for depression. 10,000 units of D3 a day will boost the immune system and make a person much more resistant to colds and flu. There are simple things (diatomaseous earth) that will kill intestinal parasites. and will also keep moths and weevils out of pasta, rice, flour. And so on. Needless to say, our ‘prepping’ includes these things too.

Thanks! For antibiotics that’s probably the place to go. But they will probably give you a blank stare if you ask for an Angiotensin II receptor antagonist or something (unless there are cows with high blood pressure, probably are).

Your ignorant reply just re-enforces my comments. Which episode were you on? LOL ...

Another extreme case of "the Pot calling the kettle black" better known as Projection.

I bought a 55 gal drum of sodium hypochlorite (bleach).

I can use it in my business or do laundry with it. It has many uses for a prepper.

This reminds me of a couple weeks ago I said I had brought 40 lbs. of sugar on sale to put up and a FReeper posted back that I should skip the sugar as it is poison.

Can you recommend an overseas pharmacy? A lot of the ones that advertise are scams.

I prefer the 1902 edition.

The 1979 english edition and later left a lot to be desired, in my opinion.

Reading french recipes helps. Lot more graphic... but accurate.

And yes, I pour off the drained blood from meat to save for thickening stews. Waste not, want not, and fine dining does taste good.

I love the Indo-Pak store.

I bought about 25 lbs. of spices for $80.

Now I make several recipes of curry powder.

BTW, for very long term storage, I freeze or refrigerate. E.g., I keep meds in the fridge.

“...I should skip the sugar...”

LOL. We have a stockpile of sugar too, maybe 75 lbs or so at the moment. We use only a little, but it is necessary for some things, and in moderation sugar is ok. We would all miss it if we had none available.

We also have some raw local honey and we keep some maple syrup on hand. Don’t know that I will stockpile the maple syrup though...sugar and/or honey is a lot less expensive.

If it is just for adding sweetness, I use Stevia...I don’t need the extra calories at the moment.

The Spice Islands got their name for a reason.

The slave trade was based on sugar cane.

Make your own judgement from history about the value of things. I never heard of a war fought over beef or corn.

I can get protein and carbs easy from the ground around here. Even if they suck.

But I can't grow coffee, I can only grow some spices (I do have more than most), and sugar from starches is hard.

Not a bad idea to have natural products on hand that fight infections...Grapefruit Seed Extract has many uses. It is a nutribiotic that can be used to fight an abundance of infections. Also Oil of Oregeno and Live Manuka Honey. Black Elderberry is good for bacterial and viral infections.

If you dont have any downers or pain killers to calm them down with, you can always hit them over the head with the rubber mallet
