There’s been a bit of debate about Elfman’s intent with this particular song. Back when he wrote it (very early 80s), it was supposed to be a “kiss off!” statement to the stuff he was reading about in the socialist movement in the UK. More recently (i.e. now that he’s a Hollywood fixture), he’s said in interviews the song was “satire.”
Me, I think Danny just liked to rattle people’s cages with his music, and played no favorites with a particular viewpoint. At any rate, I think the song is a brilliant indictment of the OWS types and their predecessors, whatever the intent.
A darn fine tune, too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqXAW2snGMI
Happy New Year!
BTW, “Only a Lad” has an interesting (read: realistic/conservative) bent, as well. Probably my fave Oingo Boingo tune, too.

Johnny was bad, even as a child everybody could tell
Everyone said if you don’t get straight
You’ll surely go to hell
But Johnny didn’t care
He was an outlaw by the time that he was
Ten years old
He didn’t wanna do what he was told
Just a prankster, juvenile gangster
His teachers didn’t understand
They kicked him out of school
At a tender early age
Just because he didn’t want to learn things
He liked to burn things
The lady down the block
She had a radio that Johnny wanted oh so bad
So he took it the first chance he had
Then he shot her in the leg
And this is what she said
Only a lad
You really can’t blame him
Only a lad
Society made him
Only a lad
He’s our responsibility
Only a lad
He really couldn’t help it
Only a lad
He didn’t want to do it
Only a lad
He’s underprivileged and abused
Perhaps a little bit confused
His parents gave up they couldn’t influence his attitude
Nobody could help
The little man had no gratitude
And when he stole the car
Nobody dreamed that he would
Try to take it so far
He didn’t mean to hit the poor man
Who had to go and die
It made the judge cry
Only a lad
He really couldn’t help it
Only a lad
He didn’t want to do it
Only a lad
He’s underprivileged and abused
Perhaps a little bit confused
It’s not his fault that he can’t believe
It’s not his fault that he can’t behave
Society made him go astray
Perhaps if we’re nice he’ll go away?
Perhaps he’ll go away
He’ll go away
(Repeat chorus)
Hey there Johnny you really don’t fool me
You get away with murder
And you think it’s funny
You don’t give a damn if we live or if we die
Hey there Johnny boy
I hope you fry!
Thanks! Happy New Year!
wait wait!! I know this one...
Because we're not idiots?
Mostly because the Tea Party isn’t in to Civil Disobedience and destruction of oither people’s property.
We also do not do drugs, nor pee and dispose of our waste products in public nor without benefit of a proper toilet.
We also have jobs and work to go to and like to spend time with our families instead of spending the night sleeping in a commune and listening to the sounds of rooting and rutting .
What Oingo Boingo song was that from?
And so the idiots get the mindshare.
Nobody with even enough time to sing some Oingo Boingo to them before dispersing? That might get a news crew.
I doubt he even knew about it. He was busy with his arms wrapped around that talentless slug, Lady Gaga in “Sign of the Times Square”.
With all those occupiers in there, the owner needs to quickly erect a very tall chain-link fence around Zuccotti Park. Razor wire on top. Then leave.
We have to work.
God bless ‘em. - Nancy Pelosi

He gave the title above the lyrics: “Only A Lad”, from their debut album of the same name.
I see much of today's OWS (Occupy Wall Street) movement to be like that of liberal hippie movement of the 60's (which sometimes occupied administrative buildings) of the modern moral decline. Which, while having some legitimate grievances, was overall inspired by the leader of the original occupy movement, that of "occupy God's throne (OGT) , by a being, who like many protesters i believe, did not want to strive lawfully for recompense, (2Tim. 2:5) but sought to climb up some other way. (Jn. 10:1)
God, who needs nothing, (Acts 17:25) and who is abounds in giving, even that which cost Him the most, (Jn. 3:16; Rm. 8:32; 1Jn. 4:9-13) and who is Almighty, omniscient and eternal, calls us to make Him our God, which is to our benefit, versus ultimately living for and trusting in created things, which will fail and can mislead us. But which glory the created being named Lucifer lusted after and in self will would have taken, (Is. 14:12ff) while the overcomers by faith in Christ will sit with Christ in His throne, even as He also overcame, and is set down with His Father in His throne. (Rv. 3:21)
The devil would have God divest Himself of His rightful power and position, in order to "share the wealth" with the greedy one worthy of Hell. And which rebellion the devil seeks to replicate in his movements, and it is can be seen that the ideology driving the OWS movement is one that is at war with the God behind traditional Biblical morality and the principles of rightfully gaining rewards, and basically demands that those who are worthy of their recompense (and do not share their ideology) should divest themselves of it so that even the indolent can live as a wealthy man, and even rather than volitional charity being shown being.
As seen in the Garden of Eden event, (Gn. 3:1-5) the key tactic in gaining disciples of the devil is to instill a victim entitlement mentality, with its resentment, that one has been, and is, being dealt with unfairly by God and or those who to a good degree represent valid authority and position. The devil then works to deepen and maintain this mentality by imagining or magnifying additional injustices, while minimizing positives, past or present, for which they should be gratefully mindful of.
In the Garden, the devil sought to instill mentality this by working to convince Eve she was victimized by a solitary restriction, which she was essentially told she should have equal rights, it being unfair that God should have a certain unique knowledge and what went with it, and that therefore her rebellion was justified and necessary. Thus the devil basically demanded that God "share the wealth," but which Divine knowledge innocence needed not, nor which powers she had a claim to.
The resultant lust (a selfish craving for something which will take, not wait to receive by loving and obeying God and doing what is right) today is essentially for a Garden of Eden without God, and unwarranted god-like power for self perceived elites, in which ultimately no one has to obey orders and be found worthy of position and power according to Biblical principles, and where such commitments as marriage are not required for lawful sexual union, or even wearing clothes (except for the climate), as if man did not have a fallen nature prone to sin. (Thus in the liberal mind wars are never necessary, and if the US laid down its weapons China, et al would follow.) Instead, all eat from the trees which grow food and whatever else is needed or lusted after.
But in this case the government is as God, which freely provides everything for this elite class. But despite the delusion, someone must pay for such, and this welfare comes at the expense of the slave class who actually rightfully earn money, who are kept in subjection by the railing of the elite against those who have been blessed by doing right. In essence, it is a proxy government for the devil, and by the devil and his disciples.
As in Godless Communism which also relies upon a victim entitlement mentality, the pretext behind this rebellion is that of some abuse, real and or magnified or imagined. The hippie movement reproved materialism to justify their rebellion against Biblical morality, commitment, responsibility, diligence, hard work and other proven principals necessary for good families and society, and penalties for rejecting them. And in its place they sought to establish a Woodstock type utopia of music, fornication and drugs (delusion by the latter providing the closest thing to what they seek), having no problem with able-bodied men taking food stamps from the government they habitually protested against. But which being implemented results more in a Haight Asbury experience than any utopia, and of being in dependance upon the traditional model they rebelled against, while it exists.
Having become mainstream, the protest of this movement today is more mature and exists in and is fostered by the government, with universities being their seminaries (a cause and effect relationship, the latter being in contrast to earlier education in America), and the pretext used to justify the OWS movement is abuse of capitalism. However, what drives the protest is actually (if unconsciously) the failure of their ideology, of the government to provide what this fantasy demands. (which would include elimination of their student loan debt , which presently can be achieved by working for the government for or non-religious non profits for 10 years, while making all payments). And as in Communism and those who follow the devil, this would end up with a self deluded class of elites who gained their power by craft, and who are worse than whatever abusers they may have replaced.
The Present Costs of the War against God are manifestly abundant in souls, live and money, with spiritual blindness in part happening to America, part of which results in electing prevaricating princes who tell them what to hear. And thus let u hear the conclusion of the matter on a national scope: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance." (Psalms 33:12)
"The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God." (Psalms 9:17)
If all it takes to make a liberal is for a conservative to lose a job, conservatives are weaker than they think.
It’s so easy to wallow in “gimme.” When Occupunks began to demand student loans to be erased for majors they knew were marginal markets back when they embarked on them, they left the realm of the even plausible. And not a peep out of them yet to these “overly rich” entities asking for more jobs to be opened, which might or might not have helped but would have been a more sensible thing to want. Going to your devil analogy, Satan presumed on something that he knew was impossible, though for a while people might be brought to believe it. It is not even so much a battle as an exercise in ultimate futility.
The first song I posted is “Capitalism”. The other one is “Only a Lad”. Both are from the the 1981 album Only a Lad (great album, btw!).
Happy New Year!
I would add to your list:
1) We believe that work and effort should be a positive benefit for our neighbors and Nation as well as for ones self.
2) We believe that individual worth and value is not built or composed by monies from people like Soros who want to box it all up in communistic bundle.
3) We believe that some individuals should not be allowed to impede the goings of others who care less about the messages or vexatious messengers of the words.
4) We believe the USA is for humans who in concert reject infantile gang behavior.
Because we have jobs.
That’s maybe the sixth time I’ve seen that kind of snark here, but seriously. Is currently having a job some kind of unwritten requirement for Tea partiers? How about people of conservative conscience who have been unceremoniously bounced out of work because of ludicrous, counterproductive leftist policies? Can’t they spare a day to make a local stink about how lefties are making their chances of re-entering the workforce even worse? Can’t OWS, at least, be Freeped?
