Ron Paul: Hamas was started by Israel
Red State ^

Posted on 12/29/2011 5:53:03 PM PST by mnehring

Hamas was encouraged and started by the Israelis as a tool to counteract Yasser Arafat, so says Ron Paul.

Need I say more? Skip to 1:20 (Video at link)

(via Hotair)

***

UPDATE: Ed Morrissey described earlier today how Hamas came to be, and it wasn’t as Paul suggests:

So who started Hamas? Was it really Israel? Er … no, not really, and the suggestion that Israel wanted Hamas as a counterweight to the PLO is simply ludicrous. Hamas developed from a network of Muslim Brotherhood charities in Gaza in the mid-1980s. The Muslim Brotherhood was one of the most notorious of anti-Israeli organizations in the region, formed in the 1920s in opposition to the collapse of the Caliphate and the British Mandate that followed. At the founding of Hamas, it called for “jihad” to seize Israel and create an Islamist state from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. They formed in direct opposition to the PLO (now called Fatah in the Palestinian Authority government), to some extent because Yasser Arafat was negotiating with Israel, albeit in bad faith while trying to drum up financial and political support in the West. Hamas gets its funding from Iran, hardly a disinterested third party in this conflict — and the main engine of radicalizing Muslims, eclipsing the Muslim Brotherhood ever since the Iranian revolution of 1979.

Also, Ron Paul fans, stop sending me the WSJ article that you think backs up Paul’s argument. Ed Morrissey took that apart as well. Jump over to Hotair and read the update.

If not for his crazy foreign-policy stuff, he’d still be in favor of legalizing heroin and would have an atrocious voting record on a whole slew of issues. Paul would be a terrible fit for the GOP—and the American electorate generally—even if you gave him a mulligan on foreign relations.

You’re right!

RE :”Sometimes when I hear the utter craziness coming out of his trap I think that he is just spewing this garbage because deep down psychologically he doesn’t want to win............
I never considered that until now. If not for this crazy foreign policy stuff he'd practically be President-Elect right now. More likely he's just a kook but self-sabotage is an interesting theory.

I been meaning to mention that, glad you pinged me. You got it.
I have no doubt that Ron Paul has no desire to be POTUS. That job practically and politically is the exact opposite of the RP act. In fact he has been asked why he is running and he gives no answer. His real reason is to :
1) Get personal coverage/attention of him giving his views, and
2) cause headaches for Republicans (hard for me to have sympathy for them) .

Unfortunately many in his personality cult really believe he wants to be POTUS which makes no sense at all, just like those in that other personality cult actually believed she was running (I warned you about that).

The Ron Paul act requires that Paul be far from the WH when the economy implodes so he and his cult can say "Ron Paul warned you". Well Ron did warn us, so did millions of others because it's no secret. But what did he do to stop it?

Hamas was co-founded by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin as an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. When Israel imprisoned Yassin, the fringe group almost disappeared until Bibi Netanyahu released Yassin as a ‘goodwill’ gesture. Yassin was then a hero and Hamas revived to take control of Gaza.

Netanyahu, while adored on FR, has actually spent his career as an appeaser.

I thought the exact same thing about a week ago. LOL

Perhaps using his absurd, idiotic, warped logic that “The bad things that others do to us is because of our own actions”, I can see where he’d say Israel created Hamas.

I am no Ron Paul supporter, but he is somewhat correct that the Israelis supported Hamas. They did so at a time when the world was a very different place than it is now. Back in the 70’s and 80’s the menace was Communism. Even in the Middle East the Palestinian terror groups were all secular left wing outfits. How soon we forget George Habash and the PFLP, and Abu Nidal, who Saddam had whacked because he knew too much.Does anybody remember that the PLO operated with others like Carlos the Jackal and the Baader Meinhoff Gang. Just like the rest of the Western World, Israel saw Islamic groups as a counterweight to the leftist PLO in the occupied territories. Many saw Islam as a weapon to be used against the Soviets and their puppets. Even during the 1982 Lebanon War the same people who make up the core support for Hezbollah welcomed the Israelis as liberators in South Lebanon. These groups were seen as foes of the PLO, both Hamas in the West Bank and Gaza and Hezbollah in South Lebanon. At the same time we provided support to Islamic groups in Afghanistan. Some remained lifelong allies like Massood in the Panjshir Valley, while others like Hekmatyar we are fighting today.
The fact that Israel supported Hamas 30 years ago is no secret. I learned this in a book I read about the original Intifada back in the early 90’s. It was written by journalists from the Jerusalem Post. The real response is so what. They and everybody else did not foresee that this would turn into a real Frankenstein's monster. The whole foreign policy establishment of the western world saw Islam as some conservative religion that was ready to battle Communism. That it turned against us was not predicted by anybody at the time. Even at the time of the rise of the Ayatollahs, the talk of military action was not of fighting Iran, but of taking on the Soviets inside Iran if they invaded the place.
In context, the Israelis were acting no different than anybody else did during the Cold War.

Gads, and folks in my okld church were adament for this guy alsy election. One wonder, no I wonder what could have been worse, Ron paul's weird , no mentally ill statements and written propaganda or Obama the manchurian candidate who has NO past history.

We NEED Obabam's reacoed, but more than anything I think Obama will lose on his own publicized history. One might hink past history is always good and bad but with none exhudes pure paranois. As for paul his past Hx gives him a rare passs into the mental facility of his choice. Were Obama's past enlightenedMe thinketh his past would pale in comparison to Paul's nevertheless red flags and my tin foil hat will not save me from this Obama whoever he is and from Paul, I now know too much to even consider him anything more than a cult leader, not a presidential candidate.

Oh no, I think he really believes he could win, and if he doesn’t get the nomination, he’s determined to stick it to us by running third party. What a prick, that he’d guarantee BHO another term and screw the country.

His son has to be embarrassed.

Newt recently said Ron Paul and Barack Obama would be a terrible choice for the American people.

But seriously, what would happen is that, as a third party runner, RP would siphon off enough votes to re-elect BHO. A very spiteful and treacherous thing to pull on America.
