Ohio's Largest Newspapers: Yes on Issue 2
ATR ^ | 2011-10-31 | Joshua Culling

Issue 2 continues to receive a strong showing of support from Ohio's major newspapers, underscoring the fact that this is far from a partisan debate. It is about reforming Ohio's status quo, and the flood of newspaper endorsements confirms that the labor reforms in Senate Bill 5 are far from radical.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer's endorsement of Issue 2:

Ohio desperately needs to control the costs of government at all levels. It needs to send a clear message that the old, familiar ways of doing the public's business have to change.
In schools, the emphasis has to be on the progress of children, not the comfort of adults. In city halls and county offices, the impact on those who pay the bills -- and the sheer magnitude of those bills -- must be paramount.

The Columbus Dispatch on the lack of partisanship inherent to this fight:

Despite the insistence of opponents, the effort to reform Ohio’s out-of-balance collective-bargaining law is not an expression of disrespect for or dissatisfaction with Ohio teachers, police officers, firefighters and other government employees. It is a much-needed attempt to restore control over public spending to the public officials elected to exercise that control.
It does not assert that public employees are worth less than the compensation they’re receiving, only that the compensation has grown faster than the public’s ability to pay for it.

The Cincinnati Enquirer on similar labor reforms pushed by prominent Democrats:

Voters are demanding reforms from their elected officials. Ohio's SB 5, like similar measures in Wisconsin and elsewhere, is the response to that. And it's not just in states where Republicans control the statehouse and governor's mansion. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, has been pushing to trim public-employee agreements, unsettling his allies. The same with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who's taken union heat for trying to weed out costly labor rules.

If Ohio voters approve Issue 2, we want schools and local governments to take full advantage of this added flexibility and deliver for taxpayers. We want to see innovation, savings and efficiency. We expect results.

In addition to the state’s three largest papers, the Canton Repository, Findlay Courier, Wheeling Intelligencer and Warren Tribune-Chronicle have all come out in support of Issue 2. See other statewide endorsements at Building a Better Ohio.

where are the tea party folks on this issue and why are they strangely quiet

Perhaps we have jobs we need to keep, unlike the paid union spokesmen and OWS types.

I've debated this with people. There isn't silence, it's just that we don't have loud and obnoxious union support.

If you don’t have a “vote yes” sign, you are much less likely to be a victim of vandalism.

You are NOT kidding FRiend.

The union thugs have really amped up the violence and intimidation this year. Those “Vote NO!” commercials are insanely stupid. They don't understand that MORE layoffs will result from rejecting Issue 2. There is only so much tax money to be squeezed from the producing class. If the union thugs force raises in salaries and benefits, fewer people can be supported. They think taxpayer pockets are bottomless, but I say, f-that. Why don't liberals understand simple arithmetic? But doing arithmetic takes the brain of a grade schooler, and liberals don't have that.

I agree the only poll that matters is the one when all the votes are counted.

The poll that seems to gathering the most attention is one done by Quinnipiac University. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research. It doesn't appear sponsored by any one.

That poll found a significant lead for the union side among those who were polled. The poll questions and other data is posted on their web site.

Well, my wife and I have marched down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol with the “tea party” two times, so I think our credentials are as worthy as yours. Therefore, I am surprised that our experience with other TEA partiers was so different from yours. For example, I cannot believe that one marcher’s sign “Stop Stealing From My Grandchildren” was REALLY a plea for more tax-payer funded benefits to be provided to the marcher. And I cannot believe that the sign “Stop the Spending, Stupid!” was REALLY a plea for MORE government spending.Well I did one better. I talked. I asked questions. I asked why they were angry about TARP. The reply was "If I got into a situation like that, they'd let me fail. That's not right. Why don't they support the little guy". I asked about entitlements. And then asked whether medicare or SS payments should be reduced for those of us not quite there. "Hell no was the reply". I asked about college educations given to poor people. "Where's the free college education for my kids" was the reply. I asked about loans or opportunity set asides for minorities or refugees coming to our land. "Well I went and asked for some of that and didn't get it. If I can't get free money, why should they".

Yep, that's tea part talk. Everyone? No. Most? Yes.

He said it after I gave him candy. Same with a teenager who asked if I was dressed up as Grandma (I had on glasses and a blanket around me. lol) These kids aren’t dummies. Get the candy, then the insult!

IT sure was loud on tax day.

I say again, Tea Party people have jobs to keep and business to take care of.

The opposition to Issue 2 are the unemployable OWS types and the union types who are paid to protest and make noise. You can't compare them.

IT sure was loud on tax day.

One day is all I could spare. I have a job. I make my noise in personal arguments, but you don't hear it or the thousands and thousands of other one-one arguments that happen between others.

Just interested and care.

Ditto. We all do things to help in our own way. You need to give others more credit.

The union thugs...don't understand that MORE layoffs will result from rejecting Issue 2.

Actually, the older ones do, but they don't care. They have seniority.
