Issue 2 continues to receive a strong showing of support from Ohio's major newspapers, underscoring the fact that this is far from a partisan debate. It is about reforming Ohio's status quo, and the flood of newspaper endorsements confirms that the labor reforms in Senate Bill 5 are far from radical.
From the Cleveland Plain Dealer's endorsement of Issue 2:
Ohio desperately needs to control the costs of government at all levels. It needs to send a clear message that the old, familiar ways of doing the public's business have to change.
In schools, the emphasis has to be on the progress of children, not the comfort of adults. In city halls and county offices, the impact on those who pay the bills -- and the sheer magnitude of those bills -- must be paramount.
The Columbus Dispatch on the lack of partisanship inherent to this fight:
Despite the insistence of opponents, the effort to reform Ohio’s out-of-balance collective-bargaining law is not an expression of disrespect for or dissatisfaction with Ohio teachers, police officers, firefighters and other government employees. It is a much-needed attempt to restore control over public spending to the public officials elected to exercise that control.
It does not assert that public employees are worth less than the compensation they’re receiving, only that the compensation has grown faster than the public’s ability to pay for it.
The Cincinnati Enquirer on similar labor reforms pushed by prominent Democrats:
Voters are demanding reforms from their elected officials. Ohio's SB 5, like similar measures in Wisconsin and elsewhere, is the response to that. And it's not just in states where Republicans control the statehouse and governor's mansion. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, has been pushing to trim public-employee agreements, unsettling his allies. The same with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who's taken union heat for trying to weed out costly labor rules.

If Ohio voters approve Issue 2, we want schools and local governments to take full advantage of this added flexibility and deliver for taxpayers. We want to see innovation, savings and efficiency. We expect results.

The commercials have been disgusting and misleading. Old folks talking about firemen saving children from burning buildings and how that will all change if people vote no on Issue 2.
My niece who is in school at Wright State helped with getting Issue 2 on the ballot. She’s studying to be a teacher and thinks the reforms are unfair to teachers. As in being held accountable for one’s job performance is too much to ask? I told her that everyone in the private sector is accountable for their work and “job security” isn’t in our lexicon.
My wife and I are both voting YES!
Honestly, I've always felt the majority of tea party members were more upset about what they didn't get than someone else did (bail outs, free tuition, easy mortgage forgiveness) than about cost control of the government.
And if you look at the make up of many tea party groups, a number of the members are teachers, fire fighters, police officers, the folks who plow and maintain roads, medical folks who work for state run facilities and yes simple public servants. You won't find them cutting their own throats.
If he were smart he would have picked up his shotgun and then called 911. Waiting for the police wouldn’t be a problem if they are simply coming to clean up the mess.
I think the police/fire angle in the commercials is silly. They keep saying staffing would be taken out of the hands of professionals and put in the hands of politicians.
Of course, they seem to forget that staffing for police/fire is the first to get cut when a city is trying to force a tax increase. But that’s an OK price for them to continue to feed at the trough.
More importantly, staffing goes down to almost zero when the union goons get their periodic “blue flue” when theyre on one of their periodic rants, and they’d be on strike if it were allowed, also taking staffing down to zero.
But it’s OK to take away staff if it advances a Leftist cause. It’s a terrible tragedy if it results from better managing of the public finances.
But I say, "Screw 'em. If they vote it down, then quite a few people will be laid off . . ."
The "Vote No" commercials are just plain stupid and offensive . . . suggesting that we're all going to die on the streets or get burned to death if we don't "Vote No." Typical stupid and selfish union thug thinking.

Let me make sure I have the upshot on this.
The unions want a no vote, right? Then we have all the major newspapers endorsing a yes vote?
For conservatives and taxpayers a yes vote is a good thing?
So from some of the posts bemoaning that the Tea Party is not out in mass is a bad thing?
Looks to me that sanity rules given the newspapers are doing their civic job and being responsible on this issue. The Tea Party was not formed to be a political party. It was formed to get the complete and undivided attention of the politicians and MSM. Looks like it is working in this regard.

Unfortunately, I think Issue 2 will get shot down. I live in the liberal strong hold of Cleveland, surrounded by union thugs and the brainwashed. Last night as I was handing out candy, some older kid shouted, “Vote NO on Issue 2” as he ran off. I’m wondering if it was his teacher that put him up to it.

IF, the polls hold up (yes I know the only poll that counts is on election day, but they can be barometers) the No votes will win.
So even though the state and the newspapers are on board (and who really reads the editorials among the masses), the polls are indicating a union win.
And yet TP folks are strangely quiet.

Sure hope the people in Ohio do the right thing, but most polls show the good guys losing badly.
If the polls are to be believed, then yes the TP folks should be out there but since I also know that many polls are bought and paid for because nobody is going to do them for free.
Well, my wife and I have marched down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol with the “tea party” two times, so I think our credentials are as worthy as yours.
Therefore, I am surprised that our experience with other TEA partiers was so different from yours.
For example, I cannot believe that one marcher’s sign “Stop Stealing From My Grandchildren” was REALLY a plea for more tax-payer funded benefits to be provided to the marcher.
And I cannot believe that the sign “Stop the Spending, Stupid!” was REALLY a plea for MORE government spending.
I know that our brain-dead newscasters have been trying to create an appearance of equivalency between the selfish “Occupy Someplace” cry-babies and the TEA Party. But, as you must know, the behavior of those groups is completely different.
If TEA Party members are not “protesting” this or “demanding” that, every day, on a 24/7 basis — please understand that most TEA Partiers have real jobs to do in the real economy. And remember that George Soros isn’t paying TEA Partiers to perform in his street theater.
