Gloria Steinem sounds off on Kardashian sisters, says the reality stars do NOT empower other women.
...Shortly before the lunch, we asked the 77-year-old Steinem if she thought the Kardashians "empower" other women.
"No," replied the founder of Ms. magazine. "They're not empowering other women, but there's no point in blaming the people who take advantage of the system without changing the system.
"Imagine if this were a family of boys," Steinem continued. "If men were rewarded for the same things, they would be doing it too."
We guess she hasn't seen "Jersey Shore."
On Lady Gaga, Steinem observed:
"I think she speaks for outsiders and she champions being yourself no matter what.
"It seems positive to me," she said, then added that she'd "be happy to go" to one of the Fame Monster's concerts.
Speaking of spectacles, we had to ask Steinem about the Strauss-Kahn case, particularly since she'd endorsed District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. during the election.
With the credibility of the housekeeper who accused DSK of sexual assault under scrutiny, Vance has come under fire for his office's decision to prosecute the case.
But Steinem remained supportive.
"It seems to me so far that Vance has done a very good job," Steinem told us. "I hope that he will be able to leave it up to the jury. I hope it will be prosecuted."
The proto-feminist reserved some of her toughest words for possible presidential candidate Palin.
During remarks she made to the luncheon crowd, Steinem called the Grizzly Mama "a woman only a man can love," adding that Palin is "up there with [Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas."
>>>Gloria Steinem sounds off
Did she do a Barney Frank-esque release of flatus on TV?
This must stop! Two days of Gloria whatshername? When I want to know what she thinks about anything, I’ll go ask a sea cucumber. They have the same IQ.
...calling that which is evil, good, and that which is good, evil.
Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding!
We have a winner!
You, Gloria, and your feminist sisters have always believed that women should be allowed to be just like men in that they can have sex anytime they want with whoever they want. Well, the Karsadhian sisters are the epitome of THAT notion, so I have no idea why you're not praising them to the hilt!
Because the Kardashians can sell it. Women like Steinem have nothing to sell (in terms of sexuality). Which is why many feminists support free sex but despise commercialized sex such as porn, strip clubs and prostitution. When sex is commercialized, it emphasizes that some women have a higher market value than others.
You aren't well informed about the lady I see. In her day she could very easily have cashed in that way. She made a career instead. But to illustrate how she had options, here she was working undercover on an article for Huntington Hartford's Show magazine, Steinem was employed as a Playboy Bunny at the New York Playboy Club. The article detailed how women were treated at those clubs.
Steinem called the Grizzly Mama "a woman only a man can love," adding that Palin is "up there with [Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas."
