(CNSNews.com) - A plurality of Americans trust the Republican congressional leadership more than they trust President Barack Obama to handle the federal deficit and the debt ceiling, according to a new Gallup poll.

A majority of Americans are also more concerned that the government will raise the debt ceiling without plans for major spending cuts than they are that the government will precipitate a major economic crisis if it does not raise the debt limit.

Only 22 percent of Americans, according to Gallup, say they want their member of Congress to vote to raise the debt ceiling.

Why??? GOP Leaders have already announced their intention to cave on both issues and give 0bama extra powers to raise the deficit.

Obama is going to have to to a fabulously, incredibly Clintonesque job of lying in order to turn this tide. I don’t think he’s quite up to that.

Ponzinomics only works for so long. Obama needs to Pardon Maddoff and get rid of that two bit Tax Cheat Gietner. Put Maddoff in there as Tres. Sec. He could get better mileage. Gietner is an amateur compared to Maddoff.

Until they do not get the Unemployment, Social Security, and Student Loan checks. If they do not raise the limit the Ponzi Scheme is busted. They will raise the limit.

I've been out all day and this was one of the first posts I saw...so what's the latest? Has McConnell pulled back that stupid offer he made?

Just let Obama withhold checks for SS and Vets. Guaranteed the people will not blame Republicans. They will take their pitchforks right to the white house lawn.

You have misinterpreted the articles. Obama won’t win this one. He is not putting the country first and people know he just wants to go on Vaca and golf and doesn’t give a rats ass about America.

Obama’s flunky said that McConnell’s offer - a bad idea in many ways - was ‘not the preferred option’...

Obama is sticking with “tax hikes and a ‘big deal’ or no deal”

Firsdt of all it was never a “deal”. It was a “back up plan” which would still have to have been passed by the House, where it had NO chance, none, nada, zero, zilch.

Then today McConnell says any call for an increase in the debt level would not get even ONE Republican vote. This whole thing was just an attempt by the lib media, who is frantic to try and save their clueless president, to prop him up by making the Rep look as if they are caving.

The checks don’t stop because of the debt ceiling, they only stop when Obama says so. We can afford to send out the checks and pay the interest on the debt without a debt ceiling increase.

Monthly Revenue: $200B

Interest on debt: $15-20B

Social Security: $50B
