TSA takes toy away from mentally challenged man

By Howard Portnoy, Libertarian Examiner June 10, 2011 10:43 am ET

We can all sleep easier tonight knowing that Drew Mandy’s plastic toy hammer is in the trash rather than terrorizing passengers and crew on the plane he and his parents boarded for Walt Disney World.

If you’re looking for someone to thank for depriving a mentally challenged 29-year-old of his much-beloved security blanket, look no further than the Transportation and Security Administration.

Members of this feckless bunch sprung into action at Detroit Metro Airport when they first laid eyes on Mandy, whose parents say has the mental capacity of a 2-year-old. They singled him out for a special pat-down, which makes perverse sense of a sort: Special pat-downs for people with special needs.

I’d say the search was “within the realm of justifiable,” based on known terrorist behavior.

That’s pretending the search occured in a vacuum, not in the context of an agency whose head doesn’t believe young men from Yemen are more likely to commit terrorist acts than old ladies from Omaha.

"The search was justified...The confiscation was dumb."

I'm not inclined to let it go at just 'dumb.' It was at best an overt act of dominance, at worst a sadistic act of cruelty. In either case, it's more 'evil' than merely 'dumb.'

I hate the PC term "Mentally Challenged." When I was in College, I was mentally challenged for 4 years. I graduated with honors...

In case you’re feeling bad about Drew's losing his hammer, the story has a happy footnote. Drew's mother, having evidently learned long ago how to suffer fools, had a second hammer secreted in her backpack. It passed through the airport's eagle-eyed security without a hitch.

The sole purpose of TSA is to give Eric Holder's people the ability to screw with people who aren't Eric Holder's people.

I worked at a state mental hospital back in the late 80s for a couple years as a therapy aide with the more aggressive and violent retarded patients (refered to then as ‘clients’) We had one client that had a ball. When new people went on the unit they were told in no uncertain terms “Do not touch it” unless he wants to play catch.
And to put it mildly, you go NOT want an otherwise calm and peaceful 22 year old person of limited mental capacity freaking out simply because some TSA moron decided to be a smart ass.

Even the non-violent who are attached to an item like that can go off when it gets taken away. Doing so by a total stranger, is among the most evil things I can think of. I have zero tolerance for idiots like that.

TSA has done more to wake up the general public to the state of police powers and civil liberties and rights in this country than anything else I can name.

I wonder hw many Muzzies are on the DHS payroll at DTW? I had a long layover in DTW once and sought out their "Religious Reflections Room" as a handy place to find a comfortable chair and catch a little shut-eye.

When I found the room, it was devoid of all religious symbols except an arrow npointing to Makkah, but I settled in a chairb and caught a few zzzzz's anyway.

I was awakened by a number of TSA agents walking into the room, all in uniorm, all bowing in the direction of the arrow. Of course, I pretended to remain asleep while they did their thing.

But I've got to wonder how many more ROPers are working there.

Your probably right. Our government has hired what appears to be a bunch of mindless idiots to run the TSA.

Me too!!! I know my daughter can be a handful if she doesn’t understand a situation. As they grow older and larger they are harder to handle. She’s not violent but, can become very agitated and do some things that could harm herself or others. She wouldn’t mean to hurt anyone, just her flailing around could cause someone to get hurt.

Are you under the impression that terrorists woils never strap a bomb to a person that was mentally challenged?

And can you guarantee that for my wife and children who may board an airplane?

The TSA must be operating under a directive of absolutely “No discretion, no exceptions.”

They owe the American public alot of explanations about why they do the sometimes non-sensical things they do..

BTW, I won’t fly unless it would absolutely life or death in nature. I understand the need for security, (which FWIW, would not be so invasive if muslims were not in the US) but I really don’t want to be patted down.

I'm assuming you read what I wrote in the post you responded to. If you'd take a little more time to actually understand it, you'll note that I was commenting on 'dumb'; the word you used to characterize the confiscation itself. I did not take issue with your assertion that the search was justified.

Have you applied for a position with the TSA? You may be more qualified than you think!

I fly a great deal and am no fan of the TSA.

However, it is not the fault of the TSA agents at the gate, but rather the fault of the federal government who established the TSA as Security Theatre which is no more than a jobs program.

It is the TSA administrators that establish the standards of what will be confiscated.

It is the TSA administrators who schedule an overabundance of TSA agents which very often outnumber the travelers going through security.

Abolish the TSA, let the TSA administrators and agents find real jobs and let me get through an airport in 15 minutes and I will take my chances.

Actually the whole thing is rotten from top to bottom. I doubt there is any specific prohibition for 'plastic toy hammers.' If that's the case, the gate agents are empowered with at least a little discretion, which in this case, they demonstrated they are wholly incapable of exercising with any wisdom, decency or professionalism.

If in fact, there actually is an itemized prohibition against, 'toy plastic hammers,' and our policy makers and bureacrats have intruded to that level in defining our lives and our property rights, then this nation is truly beyond any hope.
