A Question for Mr. Ghosh

A week ago Bobby Ghosh, a world news editor at Times Magazine, was on MSNBC’s Hardball program. Chuck Todd, a Democrat operative and communications professional, was the substitute host for Chris Matthews. Mr. Ghosh, a native Indian, is considered a specialist on Islamicphobia in the states. He writes many articles about Islam and the Middle East. One of the things they discussed was the Muslim belated reaction to the Florida preacher’s burning of the Qur’an (Koran). Mr. Ghosh remarked that the Qur’an was a direct “transcription” of God’s word where as the Bible was written by men. Because the Qur’an is a direct “transcription” and the other is merely words by men, a story of Jesus, it is understandable why the Muslim’s would react with violence. Mr. Todd agreed and attempted to help clarify the point. They should have followed the advice of a friend of mine. “I would rather not say, it might show my ignorance.” Let’s see if their “ignorance” was shown.

The premise is God’s word was “transcribed” Therefore, the Qur’an must be God’s word. Whereas the Bible we all know was written by men even Christians agree to this. Hence, the Qur’an must be the words of God and the Bible the story of Jesus.

The Christian Bible is a combination of the Tanakh, the complete Jewish Bible, and the New Testament in which Jesus appears. The Qur’an is a compilation of Mohammad’s sayings. Mohammad states in the Qur’an these saying were given to him by a voice he heard. He identified the voice as an angel named Gabriel. He refers to God as Allah which was the name of an Arabian moon god of his time. The name of the Jewish God is described with consonants only and pronounced “Yahweh.”. He describes himself as the “I AM.” The Christian God is that of the Jews with some exceptions. He is known as Father since Jesus referred to him that way and in the fourth century the doctrine of the Trinity became prominent. Thus, Christianity presents a God-head of God, the Father, God, the Son and God, the Holy Spirit.

The Jewish Bible is composed of the Torah, the Nei’im and the Kethuvim. The Torah contains the five books of Moses. Moses spoke directly with God and was given the law on Mount Sinai after God had freed Israel from slavery in Egypt. For forty days, Moses received instruction from God. When Moses returned, his face shown with the reflection of God which resulted in his wearing a mask. The Nevi’im is the writings of the Prophets to whom God spoke in various way, directly and indirectly. The Kethuvim are the other writings of the Jewish Bible. The Torah was revealed by face to face contact with God.

The New Testament was written by apostles of Jesus and followers of Jesus. These writing are inspired by the Holy Spirit of God. The apostles received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem forty days after Jesus’ ascension. The other believers received the “gift of the Holy Spirit” which dwells in them at baptism. Thus, these writings are inspired by the Holy Spirit.

The Qur’an was compiled by Zaid twenty years after the death of Mohammad. He did this on the orders of Uthman, the caliph. Islam believes the Qur’an to be the exact words of the only god of the universe. The original writing were written on paper, leaves, and animal shoulders. All the source materials for the Qur’an were destroyed after the present Qur’an was compiled by the source materials. Thus, leaving only what is the Qur’an today. The Qur’an teaches the angel Gabriel told Allah’s words to Mohammad.

If we use Mr. Ghosh’s logic and reasoning, the Jewish Torah most certainly be the word of God. It was given directly. The Christian New Testament is the word of God given through men by inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Qur’an is the word of god given through an angel to Mohammad. So why should the Muslim so easily stirred up to violence, Mr. Ghosh? Using your logic, it would appear the Jews have a far great reason to become angry and have violent outburst at the burning of the Torah. It would appear that Christians would have more reason to become angry and have violent outburst since their Bible is given through inspiration of the indwelling Spirit of God. Plus, the Allah of Islam is not the same god as Yahweh of Israel.

So I ask again Mr. Ghosh, “Why should Muslims react violently to the burning of the Qur’an?

I believe that muslims say that the Koran must be in Arabic, as it was given to Mohammed; that the words cannot be translated properly into other languages. Therefore, if I burned an English translation of the Koran would it still be a cause for rioting and mayhem?

A few years ago and old copy of the koran was found. It was compared with the current version and many changes were found.
