A vicious snow storm descended on Lake Tahoe ski resorts on Friday. Snow was dumping at incredible rates, winds were as high as 70 mph, shutting down the freeways for a time and also many of Tahoes ski resorts, where skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts were forced to end their day early.
But the good news waking up on Saturday morning is the freeways are open, resorts are running their lifts again, the sun was shining, and over two feet of fresh snow has accumulated over the past 24 hours.
Boreal Mountain resort reported the biggest snowfall on Friday with three feet of fresh powder, while Alpine Meadows had 2½ feet of new snow.
The snowfall totals are incredibly impressive, said Kent Hoopingarner, general manager for Alpine Meadows and Homewood.

Heavenly...
I also liked water skiing on the lake.
I lived in Tahoe for a few years, and I remember the snow falling at the rate of a foot an hour several times.
I lived at Incline Village I think around 1989 and then moved to S. Shore, worked for Heavenly as a snocat mechanic at the upper mountain shop at I think 8400’, then I worked on the Tahoe Queen as the head engineer.
I remember almost 5’ of snowfall there at Ski Run, what is weird was that we would get snow every month of the year, I would see groups of bikers and tourists driving through a summer snow dump, and Caltrans able to remove several feet of snow on Hiway 50 in just a couple of hours.
The snow there is very very wet at lake level, just a couple of inches and people get stuck. Tire chains and chain installers are pretty busy when it snows.
Stick to areas like Solitude or Snowbasin and your ski budget will last longer.
Was it on the south side of the road? Sounds to me like you went past Deer Valley, Park City and the Canyons.
It’s called Boreal. To the locals its called “Boring Hill”
Oops, sorry...didnt see you meant utah..just saw the before dropped part...assumed you meant donner summit...I do remember seeing the place you described before, but cant remember the name
Watch out for the spring thaw. The American and Sacramento Rivers sometimes overflow their banks if they have a sudden thaw.
In our case, the cost was greatly mitigated by having friends with a ski house in Park City.
Mrs. JimRed's best friend and her husband (both widowed, remarried summer before last, classic beach wedding at Rehoboth, DE) invited us for a stay at their ski house. Couldn't say no to that one! Five days skiing, one at Park City and four at Deer Valley (they limit lift ticket sales so no crowds, and do not allow snowboarders so no terrifying near misses). Senior citizen discounts help a great deal- never thought getting old would be a good thing!
Other house guests were our hostess's sister and husband (a retired USN Captain). Three conservative guys, three liberal wives; THAT was interesting! At dinner Tuesday night we had our host's good friend and wife over- ready for this? Brigadier General James Johnson (ARNG-ret). You may recall that he was in charge of security (Commander, Joint Task Force Olympics, Salt Lake City, Utah) at the 2002 Winter Olympics at SLC. Great inside stories of how the venues were protected so soon after 9/11.
Without our wonderful hosts, I'd have been stuck with day trips to Shawnee, Camelback and Hunter!
