Swedish Newspaper's BLOOD LIBEL
Haaretz/The Lid ^ | 8/18/09 | The Lid

The Gentile world has tried to "pin" Blood Libels on the Jewish People for 3,500 years. It started in the land of Egypt: "Slaves were we to Pharaoh in Egypt," the Bible recounts. The 10th and final plague hit the firstborn sons of every Egyptian. However, by smearing the blood of a slaughtered lamb on the doorposts of the Jewish homes, the death passed over them. Since that day, the stain of Passover blood seemed to follow the Jews around.

...Sweden has taken the "Blood Libel" concept and transferred it from all the Jews to just the Israeli Jews.

Most Swedish political figures positioned themselves between strongly condemning Israel while mildly criticizing Hamas' actions on the one hand and totally supporting Hamas and its administration in Gaza on the other.

On the left many condemned Israel's military operation and the Jewish state in general. "I don’t think Israel is a democracy worthy of the name. It’s a racist apartheid state,” said the Left Party's Hans Linde, calling for a boycott of Israel.

On the right, Carl Bildt, Sweden's foreign minister who visited Gaza last week, blamed Israel for intentionally targeting economic infrastructure and called Israeli policies "neither morally nor politically defensible". These remarks were part of a wider debate which included demonstrations, calls for boycotts and anti-Israel diplomacy.

Following along in the tradition a Leading Swedish Newspaper has written a fictional expose' (which it claims is real) accusing the IDF of kidnapping and killing Palestinians for their Organs:

It’s a global recession. Time to blame Jews for things.

I just had a planters wart removed from my foot,
I’m sure those Jews were responsible for this in the first place.

The author clearly doesn’t understand the history of the “Blood Libel”. It had nothing to do with Passover, but apparently that’s the only “blood” this author can recall.

I’ll take that as a cue for the veracity of the rest of the article.

The first instance of the Blood Libel had nothing to do with Passover, as it occurred after the death of Christ.

It occurs in a large number of stories, some of which involve a gentile child’s blood and bread, but those aren’t the origin. It started with tales of human sacrifice and cannibalism.

It certainly did not begin with the first Passover, especially anything about the marking of Jewish homes with lamb’s blood.

And it wasn’t limited to the Jews.

“The first instance of the Blood Libel had nothing to do with Passover, as it occurred after the death of Christ.”

No, the Blood Lible (at least the European version; there were others) did have to do with Passover.

The first time (or rather the most notable time) it showed up was in 1144 CE, an unfounded rumor began in eastern England, that Jews had kidnapped a Christian child, tied him to a cross, stabbed his head to simulate Jesus’ crown of thorns, killed him, drained his body completely of blood, and mixed the blood into matzos (unleavened bread) at time of Passover. The boy involved in the year 1144 hoax became known as St. William of Norwich.

The myth shows a complete lack of understanding of Judaism. Aside from the prohibition of killing innocent persons, the Torah specifically forbids the drinking or eating of any form of blood in any quantity.

There are also variations on the theme that Jews used Chrisitan blood to cure ourselves of various bleeding maladies, etc.

How could it reference Passover and a Christian child?
The Passover occurred thousands (?) of years before the birth of Christ (and Christianity).

The first blood libels started showing up in the first century, IIRC, and were’t related to the bloody matzos. Now, it may have been re-fitted to the observance or celebration of Passover, but not Passover itself.

The author thinks that the “blood” in “blood libel” has to do with the marking of Jewish homes and clearly stated as such. I’ve seen dozens of Blood Libels, but never that.

And it’s not just a lack of understanding of Judaism.
As I said, the Blood Lible has been used against just about every religion.

“How could it reference Passover and a Christian child?”

Christians claimed Jews were using blood as part of the Passover ritual. It has something to do with a belief that Jews were cursed by some sort of bleeding ailment since the rathe unpleasant mutual disagreement occurred between Jews and Christians circa 34 CE.

“The first blood libels started showing up in the first century, IIRC, and were’t related to the bloody matzos.”

Sure. Even before that the Greeks claimed we burned childern in the Temple. The event I recount in England is the most well-known example of Blood Libel,

“The author thinks that the “blood” in “blood libel” has to do with the marking of Jewish homes and clearly stated as such.”

A tradition is that Egyptians claimed the blood that caused the original pass over came from the first born sons, and that is why so many were pissed and willing to follow Pharoah to chase the Jews.

“the Blood Lible has been used against just about every religion.”

I don’t doubt that.

In contrast to a lot of Socialist and PC morons here in Sweden, I personally think Israel has the right to defend itself.

On the other hand, I don’t think Sweden ever will forget the fate of this man, one of the best friends the Jews ever have had:
