Are Chrysler’s Dealership Closings Political Payback?
Axis of Right ^ | 5/27/2009 | Sal

One of the arguments against big government and government interference in the economy is government’s unique position to grant political favors to political allies, or to punish one’s political enemies. One of the many reasons Conservatives believe in limited government is to reduce the potential for corruption, political favors, and political punishment from the government.

A story began to unfold yesterday that illustrates this concept perfectly. As part of the bankruptcy proceedings, Chrysler announced the closing of 25% of its dealerships. At the time, Chrysler announced that it was eliminating dealerships based on location, sales volume, and other business factors. Since the announcement, evidence has mounted that highly profitable and successful dealerships were being targeted for closing as well as smaller, less profitable ones. So what is the common link that defines which dealers were closed? Doug Ross did some digging, and found that the dealers being targeted for closing donated to GOP candidates or to Barack Obama’s primary challengers in 2008, while virtually none of them donated to the Obama campaign.

Dear FRiends,

In light of what is transpiring in our nation’s capitol, more than ever, we need to ensure that places like Free Republic and other like-minded places continue to speak the plain truth. Newspapers are dying and the current administration will either bail them out or allow them to fail. If they are bailed out, they will be even more beholding to the coming socialist agenda. If they are allowed to fail, the powers that be will force the remaining electronic media to fill the void. Local coverage only. No national syndicated news/talk. The “Fairness Doctrine”, like it or not.

After that, the internet. Free Republic. And others.

We need to get this FReepathon over and right now. We need to show that we are serious and will continue forward and thrive, not just survive.

If you can spare a couple of bucks, that would be great...If not, God bless you and please stop by the FReepathon thread and give it a bump.

We’re all in this together.

Dealers might have contributed to Pubs but most of the employees probably voted for the Big “O”. I wonder how they are feeling about their boss getting his comeuppance?

however if a correlation can be shown, then this is very very very very, did I say very?, bad for the chrysler reorganization.

all members of the same class of creditors are to be treated the same. If the class of dealer creditors is divided into obama supportes and non-obama supporters (or minority and non miniority) then the bankruptcy judge can order the closings undone.

Like I said from the very beginning - Oboma is Stalinesk. I tried to warn people, but they didn't get it. Maybe now they'll understand what I was trying to say.

How likely is it that the bankruptcy judge is a dem slime?

That's true.

I wonder if there is any way that this story could gain "legs".

ALL bankruptcy records are available online via the federal PACER document system.

It would be an appealable issue that will tie up the bankrupcty.

Unfortunatly Bankruptcy Judges are NOT lifetime appointed federal judges. Thus they are subjected so some degree of political whim. That said, Bankruptcy courts are still considered a gentleman’s practice.

If it can be shown the members of a class are not being treated equally, then the bankruptcy judge will be forced to review the closings. Imagine now, the WH being subpoenaed for their meeting records regarding these closings.
