We all wondered when it was going to start. When the new administration would make their move against us as gun owners. Oh, everyone got upset about HR45--I'll bet I got over 100 e-mails warning me about this draconian gun registration bill that had been introduced in Congress.
I was really glad to see Tom Gresham, host of "Gun Talk Radio," an editor, writer, television host on "Self-Defense TV," and one of the foremost gun spokespersons, come out and tell everyone to stop worrying about legislation so absolutely over-the-top--it would never get out of committee.
Tom said save your energy for when we really need it--don't expend it trying to warn everyone in your e-mail list about legislation that would go nowhere.
Now, Tom just interviewed me, and Larry Haynie, owner of Georgia Arms, on Gun Talk--and Tom agrees, now is the time to "...unleash the hounds..." by which he means start e-mailing and writing your senators and congressmen.
Now it has come clear...now we know what they intend to do.
It is an end-run around Congress. They don't need to try to ban guns--they don't need to fight a massive battle to attempt gun registration, or limit "assault" weapon sales.
Nope. All they have to do is limit the amount of ammunition available to the civilian market, and when bullets dry up, guns will be useless.
Think we jest?
Here is a copy of the letter sent to Georgia Arms just Thursday evening--effectively cancelling a contract he had to purchase 30,000 pounds of expended military brass in .223, 7.62mm, and .50 caliber:

I was fixing to roll my own, but it is getting difficult to find components.
I do have a load of .223 .308 .45 and .9mm brass
I know there are plastic .223 cases
That said this BS of destroying taxpayer property needs to be stopped now

The chamber would act as the case. Of course it would require a new ejector scheme as there would be noting to eject but the primer.
Prolly not viable as its wouldnt be backward compatible. Just a musing.

Time for every serious gun owner to start handloading. Before long it will be the only way you'll be able to get ammo, short of stealing it.
Next gun show I go to, I’m going to look for those nice carved wooden CZ52 grips. I’m not sure if I’m ready for black rubber.
So why can’t we pursue a market response to this? Buy up the shredded brass, melt it down, and sell the refurbished brass to ammunition manufacturers?
The real issue is still government repression of Constitutional firearm ownership. If you can’t own the firearm, all the ammunition in the world is useless. Stay focused.
THey have tried lots of times, the problem is always the same: HEAT. The brass shell doesn't just hold the powder, it also takes away a lot of the excess heat. WIthout it, a firearm gets super hot rapidly.

H&K worked on that idea for years and *almost* had their design fielded by West Germany as the replacement for the G3. As Travis noted, heat-soak was a problem (the H&K ammo used a chemical primer and firing pin, but the priming compound was modified for heat resistance. IIRC, it needed a double priming charge, too - the second (larger) priming charge acted to squirt the projectile out of the propellant block (it was encased within). I don't recall whether there was any primer component remaining after ignition... I suspect it was designed so that the primer itself would be consumed in the propellant burn.
I believe the W. German government was funding that program, too - and German Reunification (and it's tremendous costs) forced the German military to scrap those plans. Perhaps it is just as well, there's no way that such ammunition could ever be crafted in someone's garage. Caseless rifle ammo might already have been the NATO standard now for years, had the Berlin Wall not fallen when it did. And we'd have been deprived of military surplus brass long ago.

One thing you can say about the RATS, they never hesitate to reward their supporters. First the porkulus which is nothing more than fully finding every RAT supporting group in perpetutity, now an attack on gun owners to reward the Brady crowd. The repubs barely acknowledge they have supporters.
Any idea why?
I knew they were going to centralize sales in the midwest.
