There were actually more white slaves than black. The white slaves were treated far worse than the blacks because the plantation owners didn’t pay for the whites. They viewed the white slaves as disposable.
The white share croppers were in some ways worse off then the black slaves. A slave was an investment in which it was in your best interest to keep healthy and alive. A sharecropper was easily replaceable and you made money off the deal.
