The President is chosen by the states. It is not a representative institution.

Actually, that's not the distinction. It would still be a republic with a popular vote for President. We elect officials to make decisions either way.
The Electoral College stems from the United States being a federation of sovereign states. It's the states that choose the President, with votes weighted by their congressional representation. The states have chosen to select their electors by holding votes within each state, but that is optional, and hasn't always been the case.
Particularly the ones who champion euthanasia or reducing the planet's population. "You first," I tell them. "Lead by example."
