The Enduring Solidarity of Whiteness
The Atlantic ^ | February 8, 2016 | Ta-Nehisi Coates

Black poverty is fundamentally distinct from white poverty--and so cannot be addressed without grappling with racism.

There have been a number of useful entries in the weeks since Senator Bernie Sanders declared himself against reparations. Perhaps the most clarifying comes from Cedric Johnson in a piece entitled, "An Open Letter To Ta-Nehisi Coates And The Liberals Who Love Him." Johnson's essay offers those of us interested in the problem of white supremacy and the question of economic class the chance to tease out how, and where, these two problems intersect. In Johnson's rendition, racism, in and of itself, holds limited explanatory power when looking at the socio-economic problems which beset African Americans. "We continue to reach for old modes of analysis in the face of a changed world," writes Johnson. "One where blackness is still derogated but anti-black racism is not the principal determinant of material conditions and economic mobility for many African Americans."

Johnson goes on to classify racism among other varieties of -isms whose primary purpose is "to advance exploitation on terms that are most favorable to investor class interests." From this perspective, the absence of specific anti-racist solutions from Bernie Sanders, as well as his rejection of reparations, make sense. By Johnson's lights, racism is a secondary concern, and to the extent that it is a concern at all, it is weapon deployed to advance the interest of a plutocratic minority....

Once you understand that graph everything falls into place.

Of course, political correctness ensures we’ll never discuss that graph in polite company.

The demise of the local corner bar and bowling alleys is killing sensible discourse in America.

Well, to be quite honest, you don’t have to imagine very far. Look to South Africa as to where you’d be living if you suddenly lived in a black majority country. You’d likely be living in a squatter’s camp, unable to find work despite your qualifications and have a very, very high chance of having some violent encounters and/or rapes in your life time.

“Like most Marxian analysis, it’s abstraction-choked and devoid of actual semantic content. I struggled through to the end and didn’t find one testable assertion.”

Bingo! The Winner!

Our government publicly acknowledges that blacks and Hispanics are inferior to whites and Asians, and that females are inferior to males. They have gone so far as to codify it in law.

Anyone using a professional of any kind from a “preferred minority” group deserves what they get.

That graph is the product of years of shunning education. It is the product of ill-educated people becoming parents who fail to properly educate, rinse and repeat.

further evidence is

I stopped listening to any of them, and specifically Ta-Whatever Coats. He's got an 80 IQ and thinks himself much smarter. He's called for reparations...and never addresses the issues of who's going to pay, how much, and after they are paid and it is subsequently squandered by the same 80 IQ's what then?

Where are you? Sounds terrific, except your profile indicates California. Something doesn’t compute.

"Black poverty is fundamentally distinct from white poverty--and so cannot be addressed without grappling with racism."

I have to agree but from a different point of view. Black poverty is imbued with comfort, privilege and no expectations while white poverty is begrudged by the government, has little comfort in government housing (being .targeted by black racists) and is expected to go to work as soon as possible.

To me, this is a "dog whistle" code word for "don't bother reading this garbage."

Just sayin'.

We have known for decades that you need only do three things in this order to avoid a life of poverty:

1. graduate from high school
2. get a job
3 get married, then have children.

In the inner cities, the drop out rate is about 80%, the unwed pregnancy rate is over 90%, and many children don’t know anyone who goes to a job every day.

Poverty is mostly a self inflicted wound.

If there was really a conspiracy to keep blacks down, Obama would still be a Chicago organizer, and all pro athletes would be white.

Racism is the practice of assuming things about people due to race/ethnicity.

For example: If I say “whites are prejudiced”, “white people have it easy”, “white people have privilege”, “blacks are oppressed”.

Marxist ideology used to shout Workers Unite against capitalism. It failed. So now they are trying “blacks and Hispanics unite” in hatred and jealously against white people.

Marxists don’t really care about anyone. They want total centralized power for a selected political/social elite class like the Chi-coms have. Some people are too pig stupid to see this is what they are doing and who they are.

Maybe it’s just me, but your graphic appears as a little blank box.

Still, I know exactly what it is.
