Southerners looking to share their Confederate holiday
Hartford Courant ^ | March 22, 2009 | Dahleen Glanton

ATLANTA — In a cultural war that has pitted Old South against new, defenders of the Confederate legacy have opened a fresh front in their campaign to polish an image tarnished, they said, by people who do not respect Southern values.

With the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States in 2011, efforts are under way in statehouses, small towns and counties across the South to push for proclamations or legislation promoting Confederate history.

Can’t wait to watch the spleen venting.

The reality is that states rights died on an overcast July day, just outside a small whistle stop town in PA. And I bet not one person was there due to the issue of slavery, or had it on their mind.

And if you can't see that now, from the perspective of time, you sir, are need an education.

Good God, you sure took that personally. Sheesh.

I just made an observation based on the fact that having watched these threads for years, I know that there are people who, on this issue, are diametrically opposed and who will stop at nothing and no argument to try and make their opponents convert to their position.

It’s always a “watching train wreck” type of discussion thread.

I'll discuss it.
Who said I was a Yankee? What is a Yankee? Isn't that a baseball team?
I'm an American. What are you?
So, enlighten me. What was noble about the Confederacy. Teach me.

“I does really tweak liberal communists though.’

Good, so do I. But I can multi task for those that pine for slavery.

Would it be possible to have all the states celebrate it on ONE day?

You never heard of state's rights?

Slavery is what, I assume, you are referring to as not being “noble”..In this, I agree...But what you don’t seem to understand is that slavery was a minor issue in the War Between the States until Lincoln decided to make it a major issue to create a disruption in the Confederacy. The main issue in the war was the uneven trade values between the inustrial north and the agricultural south. The north asked exhorbitant prices for it’s manufactured goods and refused to pay but minimumal prices for the agricultural products of the south...That’s it in a nutshell...

...heroic defense of states rights and republican values ...

Well, for two-thirds of the population anyway.

Nahhh nothing like that.
My thinking was that w/one date it would be easier to organize celebrations et. al.

I understand why you’re against the idea, and in retrospect the different dates for different states exemplifies the idea of the Confederacy.

I could, but won’t, say it’s just one time for one special purpose,it won’t happen again, I won’t say it because once it starts where does it end.

Oh, please.
“Burn any heretics lately, O noble friend?”

Is that what you bring to the table? Tell me you have something more than that!

I feel embarrassed for you.

Here, let me help.

The Confederacy was the principle of limited federal government and states rights. So even though the Confederacy failed, it was a promotion of local government over the far off federal tyranny.

All bullcrap, of course, but it makes a better case than “Burn any heretics, lately?” Oh, my. I'll say a prayer for you.

For one, they didn't sodomize their alter boys.

I find nothing noble or romantic about the confederacy either. I do love the south though.

Of course, I completely disagree on all counts. Factually I believe you are wrong. It was all about slavery and the expansion of slavery to new territories plus the balance of power in the Congress between slave and free states.

However, thank you for the rational discussion.

Yea. The South of today is the single area along with parts of the rural Midwest and Northern West states that still believe in a strong, traditional America.

I'm actually looking for parts of Southeastern Virginia to move to from Kansas.

Still won't buy a Confederate flag though.

I believe you’ll find I was factually correct..In fact, President Lincoln actually wished to ship the slaves back home to wherever they came from but decided to use them as a psychological warfare tool...It was a very clever and successful move...

That's really all I need to bring to the table to counter your irritating, ignorant attack on the South. I'm not a big Southern partisan but it's galling to hear someone deny any nobility at all to the Confederacy. It's unfair, so I will illustrate that by being unfair to your church.

You're the one who started the cheap score business, and you know it.
