If gun laws in fact worked, the sponsors of this type of legislation should have no difficulty drawing upon long lists of examples of crime rates reduced by such legislation. That they cannot do so after a century and a half of tryingthat they must sweep under the rug the southern attempts at gun control in the 1870-1910 period, the northeastern attempts in the 1920-1939 period, the attempts at both Federal and State levels in 1965-1976establishes the repeated, complete and inevitable failure of gun laws to control serious crime. -Senator Orrin Hatch, Chairman, Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution, 97th Cong., 2d Sess., The Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Committee
"Laziness travels so slowly that poverty soon overtakes him." - Benjamin Franklin
"It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues." - President Abraham Lincoln
We're going to hunt them down one at a time
it doesn't matter where they hide, as we work with our friends we will find them and bring them to justice. - President George W. Bush, 22 Nov 02
"The majority opinion correctly applies our decision in United States v. Lopez, 514 U. S. 549 (1995), and I join it in full. I write separately only to express my view that the very notion of a substantial effects test under the Commerce Clause is inconsistent with the original understanding of Congress powers and with this Courts early Commerce Clause cases. By continuing to apply this rootless and malleable standard, however circumscribed, the Court has encouraged the Federal Government to persist in its view that the Commerce Clause has virtually no limits. Until this Court replaces its existing Commerce Clause jurisprudence with a standard more consistent with the original understanding, we will continue to see Congress appropriating state police powers under the guise of regulating commerce." - Justice Clarence Thomas
"General Secretary Gorbachev,
if you seek peace,
if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe,
if you seek liberalization,
come here to this gate.
Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate.
Mr. Gorbachev...
Mr. Gorbachev, tear DOWN this wall." - President Ronald Reagan
There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do do not want to lose their jobs. - Booker T. Washington, 1911
