I am an independent market research analyst and editor in the telecom industry.   I've been at this game for 24 years and continue to publish about one major research report per year.

My business model is rather unique in the way I blend research report writing, white papers. and on-line journal stories.  Typically, 20 or more companies sponsor my research reports upfront or pay for a copy of the report after it's published.

For my web journals, I've developed a "content management system" that merges Word stories and images then uploads them to the website semi-automatically while also updating index and ads.

In my on-line journals, I publish no news, per say, but lots of "how to" advice. I've found that if you create a reputation for quality content in even a small market niche, you can sustain that niche by publishing follow-on research studies and papers in future years.

For example, I'm now the leading independent analyst publishing reports in the telecom fraud management arena.  There are probably 50 companies serving that market -- some large firms, but most are small firms.

I would like to consult with others about my business model and interest them in carving out their own research business using my coaching and the systems I've developed.  This is an ideal opportunity for a journalist or writer who has the bandwidth to get started part-time.

You do not have to be that technically savvy.  But you must love to write, be good on the phone, and enjoy working mostly alone with an occasional visit to trade shows and conferences.

For those interested, see the outline of a lecture I prepared on the subject:

Here on Free Republic I plan to publish vanities from time to time that explore the practice of writing, industry analysis, and marketing.  An example is the article Rudolf Flesch's 25 Writing Tips.

For years, I've also explored the idea of writing software to capture style errors or make useful suggestions.  I'm a decent programmer in the Visual Foxpro Language, so I intend to spend more time on that project as time permits.

Here is an index to the stories or excerpts I have contributed.
