I often wonder why: is it because the dream of reestablishing of Israel was ultimately rooted in religious tradition (though many of the later Zionists, including Theodor Herzl, were secular nationalists - it was the 19th century, after all, when the political idea of nationalism was at its peak).
Or is it because present-day leftism has completely turned its back on the concept of the sovereign nation-state? Yes, it was originally considered to be a „leftist“ idea - it originated in the French Revolution, after all, didn‘t it? - but nowadays, the left has really done an about-face on this concept .🙁
