McConnell confident Dems won't keep Gorsuch off Supreme Court

A showdown over President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee and Senate rules loomed as the number of Democrats opposing Judge Neil Gorsuch grew to two dozen on Tuesday.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, was joined by five other senators who announced their intention to vote against Gorsuch. Republicans, who hold the majority in the Senate, are intent on getting Trump's choice confirmed before Congress' two-week break in mid-April.

"Judge Gorsuch's hearing reinforced my fear that he would favor corporations and special interest elites at the expense of American workers and families," Durbin, a member of the Judiciary Committee, said of the four-day confirmation hearing last week. He announced his opposition on the Senate floor.

Whether it is ruling against children who want an equal opportunity to get a quality education or women who want access to health care, Judge Gorsuch often fails to take into account the human face behind each case," said Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., one of the five other senators announcing their opposition Tuesday.

I sure hope ol’ Mitch knows that he is in total control of this ... that the Democrat rantings mean nothing — absolutely nothing!

So we’ll see if the Democrats will filibuster.

Then, if there’s a filibuster, we’ll see if Mitch McConnell and Republicans go for the nuclear option and ban filibustering of Supreme Court nominees.

It’s all like a chess game. It’s the Democrat’s move. When they vote on ending debate, that will determine what happens. If Democrats vote to end debate and proceed to a final vote, then we sidestep a showdown over the nuclear option.

If the Democrats do filibuster, then we move to the showdown vote over the nuclear option.

Well, we’ll see what happens.

Right now the Republicans have a 52-48 majority. If all Republicans vote for the nuclear option, then there’s no problem. Are more moderate GOP members such as Susan Collins, Murkowski, Linsy Graham, on board? Conceivably if a few Republicans peel off and don’t support the nuclear option vote, then the Democrat filibuster will hold and Gorsuch won’t be confirmed, if that happens.

The nuclear option vote will be very closely watched, as the clerk calls the roll.

I bet Mitch made a stinking deal with the Dems, promising not to filibuster when a second SC nominee comes up.

No. The dems are going to do all they can to block Gorsuch. There will be NO cooperation at all. None. The obstruction has only begun.

Since this is the seat vacated by Scalia's death, I don't expect any Republican/RINO defections.

The real test of leadership will come when one of the Leftist justices goes down ... likely within the next year or so.

Collins has said that she is willing to go nuclear if the Dems force the issue. No idea what the others are thinking.

If I were Trump in that scenario I'd respond by nominating Ted Cruz. He'd benefit from that Senate "comity" business, and Rule 19 means no one in the Senate could openly criticize him.

Toughest part would be explaining to the public why you had chosen "Crooked, Lying Ted".

Hmmmm ... despite all that happened in the recent election, Ted Cruz would be a fine nominee ... not only because if confirmed he would be a strong Constitutional originalist on the Court, but also because his nomination -- let alone if he's confirmed -- would send Schumer, et al. off the deeper end!

IF it comes down to the nuclear option Republicans must act quickly and ruthlessly to fill as many vacancies on the courts as possible.

IGNORE the courtesy of the “stay” Senators can make on District Court appointees. This power has allowed the 9th Circus to develop the way it has.

Oh by the way, BREAK UP the 9th District Court. Isolate it to CA as much as possible.

I don’t see how a guy who couldn’t determine who was responsible for violence outside Trump rallies, indicates he could judge other matters in the same head.

He actually bought off on the Democrat/Leftist argument.

Then we found out those folks were paid to start fights against Trump’s supporters, to get it on camera, and discredit our candidate.

At one time I supported Ted being VP, then POTUS, and then a SCOTUS member.

No longer...

Yes, nominating Cruz would be an almost perfect pick & roll play.

Almost makes me wish Trump had not used that language during the campaign.

It’s not news that Turban Durbin will oppose a constitution-adhering nominee for the SCOTUS.

I see what you mean. Although I’d still find it hard to not support him if nominated by Trump to the USSC.

I wouldn’t support Cruz for anything. He’s despicable.

End the gentlemans filibuster. If the D’s want to block Gorsuch make them stand in the well and hold the floor.

McConnell said he would be affirmed.

Schumer said he would filibuster.

Next?
