I was born in Saigon, Vietnam. I still call it that even though that is no longer the name of the city. It amazes me that when I explain I was born there to the younger people and even some older ones, they have no idea what I am talking about. We need to actually start teaching these people real history. I am happy that my father was able to come back to Vietnam and retrieve my mother and me. Unfortunately, my sister had to remain. Finally, in 1991 she was finally able to come to the U.S.
I do not think of myself as Asian-american. I have never even checked that block on any form I have ever signed. I always check caucasian. Funny actually. In the end, I am American. Plain and simple. I mean I love my culture, food, and everything else but America is my country.
