Request for comments: new feature

Posted on 10/13/2001 3:17:06 AM PDT by John Robinson

I've been tinkering with a new way to do self-search. It will display the comments as if they were in a thread, but only displays those comments addressed to you or posted by you.

Have a look at it here:

Last 100 posts involving you -- in reverse chronological order, like latest posts

New posts to you (since last time you checked) -- in forward chronological order, like a normal thread

I think this should be listed in forward chrono order, but that might make browsing your self-search awkward.

Awesome stuff, John. These new tools definitely get my vote-of-confidence.

Sounds good espcially for us techno ignorant freepers. Good luck!

Amazing job! But it destroys my illusion that I only check FR every few days, and rarely post anything.

By the way, this will probably be the final URL for self-search. I may bring it back one level to search all forums. (notice the "fr" in the URL? That's only 1 of the many possible forums.)

Sounds pretty good. On a different note, I would suggest, as far as navigating the larger threads, a link to show all replies to a thread.

GREAT WORK AS USUAL.

Love both new features.

PARTICULARLY LIKE the dividing long threads up into 50 replies at a whack.

What can I add but keep up the great work and God bless you and yours tons.

The pseudo thread format is nice. The bold blue link to the thread in which the post or response occurs is attractive; however it is not immediately obvious that it is a link (because it is not underlined).

That's a great idea, John. Well done.

WRT the new Forum version, is there any chance you can add a paragraph break between "to XXX (screen name)" and the first line of the reply? It runs together visually and makes it a little more difficult to read the comments. At least for my aging eyeballs, it does.

Thanks for all the hard work. Sleep sometime, huh?

There is a paragraph break there. What browser are you using?

The Self Search tool is really cool. Very helpful and does automatically what I drudge through every time I do a self search. Thanks!!

I like them both. I also like the new thread layout, mainly because it loads so much faster, but I've also decided that it's easier to read. Thanks!

How about integrating the "new posts" feature with the "pseudo thread" feature by showing a double horizontal rule instead of a single horizontal rule at the boundary between "old posts" and "new posts." That way, hitting refresh (such as if the web is acting balky) won't cause the self search list to disappear.
