International poll shows opposition to U.S. strike
ZURICH (Reuters) - International public opinion opposes a massive U.S. military strike to retaliate for suicide attacks on America by hijacked aircraft, according to a Gallup poll in 31 countries whose results were released on Friday.
Only in Israel and the United States did a majority favour a military response against states shown to harbour terrorists, the survey found. People questioned elsewhere preferred to see suspected terrorists extradited and put on trial.
"Around 80 percent of Europeans and around 90 percent of South Americans favour extradition and a court verdict. By European comparison, calls for a tough military response were above average among the French (29 percent) and the Dutch (28 percent)," said Swiss polling firm Isopublic, which conducted the survey in Switzerland.
Seventy-seven percent of Israelis backed military action, while 54 percent of Americans were in favour, it said.
The surveys were done between September 17 and 19, around a week after the September 11 suicide attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington killed more than 6,000 people.
U.S. officials have named Saudi-born dissident Osama bin Laden the prime suspect and have threatened military action if Afghanistan, where bin Laden lives, does not hand him over.
Clear majorities of between 70 and 80 percent supported limiting any strike to military rather than civilian targets, the survey found.
Asked if their own country should support a U.S. military assault, people in NATO countries other than Greece tended to agree.
Four out of five Danes backed the idea, followed by 79 percent in Britain and 73 percent in France. Greeks were the least enthusiastic with only 29 percent, below 53 percent in Germany and 58 percent in Norway and Spain.

Let's see...only 54% in the US? I don't think so. Also...I've seen polls in Germany and France that show a majority support their troops fighting...much less ours. This poll is bogus bogus bogus. Even if it was right...my response is "who the hell cares what you think?".

Let some terrorist maniacs hijack a plane or four full of their citizens and fly them into key buildings. Then take the survey again.

Show them what happens with extraditions and trials. Explain the results of the 90 million dollar Pan Am 103 trial. I believe it involved a not-guilty and a "considered for parole after 20 years" set of results.

When the terrorists attack their countries, they can ask for extradition and hand holding. Until then, "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

This poll isn't on Gallups website...

Not "with us"? So, I guess that means they're with the terrorists. Pity.

Two quotes from the article:
International public opinion opposes a massive U.S. military strike
Clear majorities of between 70 and 80 percent supported limiting any strike to military rather than civilian targets, the survey found.
Isn't a limited "strike" a 'Strike,'even if it isn't a "massive strike?"
I think the headline is very misleading in saying opposition to 'a strike,' when the opposition is really to a 'massive strike.'

I knew we should have stayed out of WWI and WWII. Maybe we should have tried to just get the Germans to put Hitler on trial.

Around 80 percent of Europeans and around 90 percent of South Americans favour extradition and a court verdict. President Bush declared that his aim was to put every single "terrorist group with a global reach" out of business.
If the Europeans and South Americans believe they can extradite these terrorist groups without force, they are most welcome to attempt to extradite them before we attempt to destroy them.
If this brilliant thinking had been around in the 1940's, we could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble by skipping the fighting of World War II and proceeding directly to the extradition of the Nazis and their Trial at Nuremburg. {/sarcasm}

Ignore polls. 6,000 people cast their lot with going after the cowards--they are the only voices that count.

That's funny, somehow I really don't give a sh%t how they feel.
Just feeling a little outspoken today!

This poll is full of crap. Doesn't anyone really believe only 54% of Americans were in favor of military action? They probably polled the Berkeley, California area.

Oh for God's sake. Here is a real poll of UK Opinion:
70% (UK) in favour of military action
I just wonder whose arse Reuters pulls these polls out of. Damn stupid leftist bastards.

I think their poll must have read something like "Do you think the American imperialist dogs should be allowed to kill every man, woman and child in the Middle East?"
It was, after all, a Gallup poll. :-)
