"AMERICA REMEMBERS": VetsCoR/FRN Memorial Day Project
VetsCoR/FRN | 5/1/2002 | A Navy Vet

Posted on 05/01/2002 7:30:41 PM PDT by A Navy Vet

Fellow Americans,

Memorial Day is once again approaching. Unlike recent years, 2002 finds our sons and daughters, our husbands and wives, our brothers and sisters in harms way and willing to make the supreme sacrifice for our safety and liberty.

Sadly, over the years, Memorial Day has devolved into just another day off with little or no regard for the hundreds of thousands who have paid the ultimate price to keep our nation free.

With that in mind, Veterans for Constitutional Restoration (VetsCoR) and the Free Republic Network (FRN) have teamed up to help restore this most reverent day to its place of honor that is so rightly deserves.

In the coming weeks, the "America Remembers" team will be contacting and working with like-minded organizations to coordinate Memorial Day (observed:May 27th) activities/events across the country. With this nation-wide effort we will commemorate those who have given their lives for our national interests, as well as, give tribute to the men and women currently serving in our Armed Forces.

Below is a list of suggested activities for your local event. Please feel free to make further suggestions so we can offer ideas across a broad range. In addition to the local activities that your group may participate in, we plan to take a moment at 3:00PM local time and salute our Armed Service, present and past, in a nation-wide show of support. This coast-to-coast display of appreciation will be promoted in national and local media for the benefit of our Armed Forces. The "America Remembers" team can provide your event with any local media outlet information you may need.

1. 3:00pm local time, all participants at all locations conduct a public display such as: light candles, release balloons, honk horns, light headlights, group prayer, join in song, raise a glass;
2. Adopt-a-Base: portable cookouts, baked goods, large signed cards, flowers, plaques, t-shirts/hats, "Thank You" signs, etc.
at VA Hospitals, Military bases, Recruit Training Commands, Recruiting offices, National Cemeteries;
3. Group visits to National Cemeteries;
4. Street rallies at related locales;
5. Media interviews;
6. Concurrent on-line threads at multiple military web sites;
7. Military mass mailings for best wishes;

You're doing a great job with this. I'll be sending out several notices tomorrow, one of which will be polling Freepers in our area to join in a rally at the entrance to the veterans cemetary in West Los Angeles.

I wonder if it might not be a nice touch to hand out a rose and note to each car that comes to the cemetary, thanking them for their sacrifices on behalf of FreeRepublic.

I think the rose and note is a GREAT idea! But I'd thank them on behalf of yourself and a grateful nation.

Actually that would work out just fine. Undoubtedly they'd ask who we were and we could tell them.

I think your take provide a more classy procedure.

My family will be gathering at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, just south of Joliet, for the Memorial Day Service at 1:00 PM on May 27th.
My dad's ashes were placed there last December.
