Cursing linked to higher intelligence
CBS Local Los Angeles ^ | 11/17/2016 | Jennifer Kastner

Benjamin Bergen is the author of the book: “What the F: What Swearing Reveals About Our Language, Our Brains, and Ourselves.”

“It turns out that there are amazing things you can find out about how the mind works, how the brain works, people’s human sociality just by looking at profanity,” he explained.

The professor of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego said cursing could be linked to higher intelligence.

“It turns out that on average, the ones who swear the most also have the biggest vocabulary overall,” Bergen added.

“An intelligent person can find better words than F this and F that.”

Of course they can, but those other words will never carry the same impact, so they aren’t necessarily “better”. If that impact is what you desire, then there aren’t any “better” words.

This is nonsense

The use of swear words shows an inability to come up with a better riposte....in most cases

Listen to the special snowflakes show off their intelligence by shouting F U kill Trump

This just makes excuses for slovenly language

Another time this site needs a “+1” or “thumbs up” feature.

You are spot on!

Try cursing in a job interview to show how intelligent you are and see what happens.

When aroused to righteous anger, General Washington could curse with the best of them...

Right you are. Very intelligent people know that the subtle differences in synonyms allow under some circumstances that only one of the synonyms denotes the full meaning of that they wish to convey. For instance some people are only described by ——’’$h!+.

I don’t believe the study. I’ve found more frequently people who are below the average IQ who cuss in every other word. Educated people will cuss more strategically, evaluating the circumstance. I cuss when I am at work for emphasis with operations and peers, but I never do in meetings with customers or in the presence of upper management nor do I cuss when I am at home with the wife and kids.

Those who tend to not cuss or object to others cussing tend to be of a certain religious character. I have to wonder is this garbage study isn’t intended to cast aspersions on the intelligence of those with a religious nature because in the this modern age only idiots believe in God don’t ya know.

My husband, according to various testing in high school and college, has genius IQ and the past eight years have increased his "colorful" language quite a bit.

I also had a uncle that, at age 15, received a full scholarship to Stanford on a child genius program; this was back in the 1930's. He also was fluent in five languages but I suppose you could say he was fluent in six as he was also outspoken in "colorful".

Thanks. On the other hand, some people seem to use the f-bomb as a linguistic marker for the beginning and end of each word in a sentence ;)

Maybe if you curse creatively and variedly, you have a large vocabulary.

People who use only one noun, one verb and one adjective intensifier don’t have a big vocabulary.

One night long ago I camped next to some loud people who were indulging. They started out hollering that “This is f-—ing awesome” and in a few hours they were down to “This is f-—ing..... f-—ing.”

That s-— will f-— you up, man. And eat your brain cells for breakfast.

If this is true, it confirms a personal observation I've made over the last 35 years or so. The NCO component of the US Armed Forces, especially those engaged in the training of their various service personnel are bloody FREAKING Mensa level geniuses!

Oh hell yes!

I was blessed to work with dozens of outstanding NCOs. They kept me out of trouble when I was a know-nothing 2nd Lt. I probably wasn't that much smarter as a 1st LT.

One of them put it all in perspective, when I was displeased with how one particular field exercise went. He said, "LT, relax. Nobody died out here."

I worked in two very different environments. In one, the senior management on down to the front line swore like sailors. It was worse than the incessant swearing in Military school.

The second place was a bank. A big bank. In the corner suites you never heard a swear. Well hardly ever.

The bank was a better place to work. The people were smarter and more creative in their use of language.

I heard the bank president say “F**k” once. And let me tell you...the room stopped and paid attention.

Conservation of ammo is usually a good strategy. When you finally use it, it is effective.
