DFAS Backlog for new retirees?
Vanity | June 5, 2015 | Self

One of my buds a retired USAR officer turned 60 in April 2015, he had completed all the paperwork to start his pay last year.

However on 1 May he got a notice from DFAS there was a 30-60 backlog. He finally got his first check (deposit) today.

Anyone know about this? I could not find an article on it.

My initial impression is another way the Rats are messing with Vets.

I think there’s a news piece from Jan/Feb time-period, which discusses the fact that they had to hire 61 more employees at DFAS to handle certain types of retirement...backlog was existing....roughly 40,000 folks were in some type of 30-day-plus situation.

I generally think this occurs every five to eight years....maybe intentionally....to trigger someone into hiring more employees. The fact that everything is digitized and done via computers now....we should be requiring half the number of employees that existed in 1990, and it’s simply not that way. A guy ought to be able to review the case file of an applicant in twelve minutes and make a decision....either he’s qualified or he’s got issues and hand it off to someone to do a one-on-one analysis with the records.

I would expect that he got all back pay in his first check...

Mine started on time last year, but I had to do a lot of followup after my paperwork was purported to be missing. I sure am glad I joined the Guard after my six years of active duty was up. That extra retirement check makes a big difference.

Try waiting three to five YEARS (or more) for a V.A. decision.

The VA’s solution to their backlog was to start approving practically anybody that applied for way more than they expect. Took a friend of mine 90 days to get approved last year. I applied for compensation for injuries all documented in my medical record and and it took more than 2 years in 2010.

It’s been like that for several years now.

Are you using a veteran’s organization (DAV, AMVETS, Legion, PVA, VFW, etc.) to help you? Sometimes that makes all the difference and it doesn’t cost a dime.

Wow, I should have thought of that, only issue is that the closest VET group to me is 100 miles away. There is a downside to living in Thailand.
