I'm sharing this here because there isn't a single grunt who doesn't appreciate these loyal, faithful friends and guardians. I also know there are some reasonably high ranked grunts here, and a heck of a lot still hooked into the system who can spread the word.
This is truly a vile act. They are not disposable sensor packages with teeth. They are friends. Colleagues. I don't even like dogs much, but having 90 lbs of warm fur and teeth watching over you is immensely reassuring.

Probably never gonna happen. Good dogs and good little people, suckers.

The K-9 units in the UK get returned home, even though they have to spend 6 months in quarantine (finally got rid of rabies and really don’t want it returning.) I don’t think there is another military force anywhere in the world that doesn’t treat their 4 footed soldiers right.

You know what it’s like. Sat there in the dark, slightly bored, and suddenly one ear perks up, the other ear droops. “Something wicked is coming. Get ready.” It’s as clear as speech.
Unlike the stateside police force where K-9 dogs are officers, in the military dogs are considered equipment. US government issued, one each. The legislation being proposed would give military dogs equivalency to K-9 dogs - as members of the Armed Forces.
The goal is to help the adoptive families with some of the medical costs of sustaining an adopted aged-out or battle-injured dogsoldier (the CNN article below says they get 30 days of meds and that’s about it). And also to provide that dogsoldiers be returned to the USA for retirement discharge so adopting families don’t have to foot the cost of shipping the dog from whereever it is to the US (there are rescues that help with these costs).

We’d sling them onto cargo flights to get them home. Same with the cats - we are all fond of cats. But the thought of leaving them behind never crossed our minds, ever. Only living thing we ever left behind was an elephant - get me tipsy some day and I’ll tell you that tale.
Dogs are not equipment. However, if the military wishes to consider them so, you are required to turn in your weapons to a qualified authority when you de-mob.
They should bring them home!

Like most people, I get horrified at the treatment of veterans. Yet the dogs - I mean, they talk to you. You’ve got incoming crap from that direction. I’m peeing here because it’s a mine. Put your foot down, we don’t have all day :)
The mere fact that these friends are considered expendable offends me.
I am not offended that these dogs are considered expendable-
I AM PISSED!!!!! BRING THEM HOME!!! They did their job- now let them have a little rest before they go home to Our Creator.
I’m straight up not a dog person. Prefer cats.
But these - nope - they are my colleagues. Get them home. Full stop.
Well- dog lover here. Dogs are a gift! I can’t imagine not having them around in life. They are precious!
