My husband and I was pulled over by a cop after midnight for speeding 5 mph over the speed limit. I had too much to drink, my husband was the driver and was completely sober. When the cop smelled alcohol in the car, he became very abusive. Screaming and being very disrespectful.He became angry when my husband passed the field sobriety test and breathalyzer. At no time did the cop even suspect that I was the drunk passenger. At one point, I thought he was going to hit my husband who was cooperating fully with the field test. I got unsteadily out of the car because I was afraid for my husband. Thinking back on it now, I could have easily been shot.His partner ran toward me with fear in his face, telling me to get back in the car. This was a power hungry crazed cop. He let us go without a ticket , probably because we would have obtained his name. It was one of the most scariest situations that I have ever been in I have lost a lot of respect for the police.I am afraid of them. When you lose the support from law abiding citizens in this country, the police need to take a hard look at their own behavior.
kaila you do not need to fear the police based on one bad experience- there are PLENTY of good cops out there who WILL give you every break when you or I don’t deserve it- Yes, there are some creeps o n the force, however, there are less and less these days, and police really are taking ‘sensitivity classes’ and are becoming much more sympathetic to people’s circumstances, and many do give massive breaks to folks who probably should have them- but under the circumstances the police felt it prudent-
The problem is we ONLY hear about the bad cases- we NEVER hear about the hero cops, the cops who HELP people and go out of their way to help them etc etc etc-
Don’t let one or two bad experiences sway your view of all cops- there really are lots of great cops out there who really do care about the public and would have NEVER treated you the way that one jerk cop did
