A white police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina has been charged with murder after video emerged of him shooting an unarmed black man in the back while he was trying to run away, reports the Charleston Post and Courier. The two had been involved in a scuffle.
The man, 50-year-old Walter Scott, died Saturday after Patrolman 1st Class Michael Slager, 33, shot at him eight times, though it is not immediately clear how many shots hit him. Scott had been stopped for a broken tail light, and he ran from police “because he owed child support,” said his family, according to New York Times reporter Matt Apuzzo.
On Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Keith Summey said that the officer’s “bad decision” had led to his arrest on the charge of murder.

Depends on what you mean by “fair”. If you mean get off, I hope it’s not “fair”!!! I hope he fries, that’s fair.
He should be executed for murder. For planting evidence, it should be slow.
The video’s pretty clear. I’ve formed my opinion he’s guilty. He probably won’t try to plead he’s innocent, but try to cut a deal. Although this is such a hot issue, the black population may not stand for anything less than 1st degree murder, which is what he deserves IMO.

I used to live in Hanahan and I agree that it’s somewhat of a safe zone from the rest of North Chas.
There is no doubt that cop doesn’t belong on any police force. I think he did what he did, may have been, because he thought that losing a tazer gun to a suspect was the equivalent to losing his service weapon to one.
Either way, he’s toast.
The problem now is that since there was no conclusive video from Ferguson, people are going to think that it was covered up, and this cop is only going down because it was caught on video and the Police can wriggle out of this one.

Aggravated voluntary manslaughter under cover of authority. Give him, say, 25 years, out in maybe 10 on good behavior; especially if he’s done well previously as a cop. OTOH, if he’s got a bad violence record and has been carried on the force, throw the book at him.

I would give the cop the benefit of the doubt normally, but even I can’t find any possible way to justify it.

shooting someone fleeing in the back once is maybe defensible...
shooting someone fleeing in the back twice is questionalable at best
shooting someone fleeing, who has no weapon and is not a threat... your ass needs to be hung by the neck until you are dead..
