MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Muskogee's catholic community is in shock after its only church in the city was left picking up the pieces of a cherished relic all but destroyed by vandals.
Leaders of St. Joseph Catholic Church said a five-foot-tall plaster statue of the Virgin Mary and one of the Holy Family were adored by generations of members.
"The one of Holy Mother, the one that was pretty well pulverized in the parking lot, that has a history that dates all the way back to 1893," church manager Lucille Ferguson told 2 News.
Father Robert Matthew Dye said he knows one worshiper who touched it before every mass for years.
"It's just something that always touched me when I would see her coming in and doing that," Dye said. "And when I saw it, my thoughts came to, 'What's she going to think?'"
It shocked maintenance manager Luis Carbone to discover the storied statue in shambles from vandalism on the morning of April 19.
"It was a pain in my chest. I almost cried. It was real, real bad," Carbone said.
The church's security camera shows three people at the catholic school's playground just after midnight April 19.
The three then walk by the entrance to the main building and topple its Holy Family statue and the Virgin Mary. Only the latter, which is said to be far more valuable, was completely broken.
As of April 22, the statues are still left as they were found because the church is waiting for an insurance adjuster to check the damage.
However, church leaders said there is simply no replacing a relic like the Virgin Mary one.

What a nasty piece of work you are.
The “journalist” (I am being generous) is clueless.
I said “almost got severely injured”. Of the videos I’ve seen, some people got injured, but not severely, when the images they were glorifying fell over.
I’ve gotten injured taking a few falls tarping loads on ice coated flatbeds, but not severely. Some bruises or a sprained ankle.
People show up for church in Nigeria, get shot dead, and children kidnapped. And you seem to be offended at someone making light of a plaster image getting broken by vandals.
The diocese I lived in for over 62 years (Peoria) is closing over a third of their parishes. There should be images to spare on those RCC properties.
Ping to 24
Well ... that’s what I call “deflection” and “missing the point”. The vandals who deliberately destroyed that statue have the same mentality as the murderers and kidnappers in Nigeria ... they only lack the guts to go all the way. For now.
OK ... you admit that "almost got severely injured" is a scare term for "suffered minor injuries". Thanks.
Replace it.
Dang.
Some jerk smashed my Stradivarius.
Oh, well ... I’ll just go down to Guitar Center and replace it ...
When a hunk of plaster falls on someone, almost cracking a skull, that’s almost severely injured, imo.
One of the videos I saw, of a plaster image being dropped, showed an old nun trying to save it, but a parishoner pulled her out of harms way in the nick of time.
And if a certain airplane pilot had not reacted properly “in the nick of time”, as you put it, to a certain situation then I would not be here today. Is that “almost killed” or is that “safely avoiding harm”?
In your example, the certain pilot reacted properly. You had no input either way.
In the video I spoke of, the elderly nun was reacting, but not making a wise choice. Thankfully, she wasn’t quick enough to put herself in harms way, because (contrary to my initial memory) no one could have stopped her in time.

You're quibbling. The pilot was three feet away from me, had total input in the situation, and faced the same consequences as me. You think either of us would have survived a midair?
I don't know what motivates you to employ scare language. To a certain extent, I don't care. Regardless of motivation, that's what you're doing. Own it.
This fellow got hit, but fortunately a glancing blow:

Now you're describing the situation properly, without using inflammatory scare language.
THAT WAS CLOSE!!! (’scare language’?)
That was close. (not ‘scare language’?)
We were almost killed! (scare language)
We landed safely ... (not scare language)
