Rome's Challenge: Why do Protestants Keep Sunday? (Its not in the Bible, she changed it and wants her credit)

Most Christians assume that Sunday is the biblically approved day of worship. The Roman catholic church protests that it transferred Christian worship from the biblical Sabbath (Saturday) to Sunday, and that to try to argue that the change was made in the Bible is both dishonest and a denial of Catholic authority. If Protestantism wants to base its teachings only on the Bible, it should worship on Saturday.

That is exactly right. Bible believing and Jesus followers KEEP the same sabbaths and holy days he kept. They are IN THE BIBLE. Anything else is just tradition and bad exegesis.

Amen, my example if Jesus.....who said he was the “Lord of the Sabbath.” Not interested in tradition.

Actually, she’s not a hyprocrit. She’s admitting She changed the day. She claims it’s her authority since she stands above scripture.

Yes, this is blatant hypocrisy, and blasphemy, to boot.

No denomination is above the written word of God and Catholicism, despite its claims, does not have authority to change Scripture.

I guess your not a big student of Bible prophecy. In prophecy, a “woman” is the church. I believe she is one of women...and not the good one.

The New Testament records early believers gathering for worship on Sunday but does not talk about changing the Sabbath. If keeping the Sabbath is still commanded, no reason Saturday can’t still be the Sabbath and Sunday be the day for the church to gather for collective worship.

I struggle to understand what all the fuss is about.

Exodus 20, 8-10:
8 Remember the Sabbath day, maintaining its holiness. 9 Six days you are to labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You are not to do any work—neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your livestock, nor any foreigner who lives among you.

That is quite clear. Work six days. Honor the seventh day. What does it matter what day that is? A nurse might be scheduled to work on weekends. She honors the Sabbath on her first day off.

Another person has every Wednesday free. No work, no commitments. He chooses to honor the Sabbath on that day.

Or these people any less obedient than someone who is fixed on a Saturday or a Sunday?

It’s so funny when superstitious people argue over the details.

Who cares about the day? It is important to gather with like minded believers who read the Scriptures in context to understand the message given to us in the Bible. A brother in our church (where men speak, and women do not. Both groups sing. We have the best documents from antiquity that explains the Gospel to us. One brother explained it like this: “text without context is pretext.” This is why we carefully handle the Bible that was once given to the Church and look for common themes.

Not a single text in the new testament shows keeping Sunday. And don’t show me a brunch on Sunday changes the ten Commandments, or paul passing through a town and telling everyone to set some money aside for when he comes by.

Jesus said NOT ONE JOT OR TITTLE of the law will change......the Ten Commandments. A Denny’s brunch don’t change the Ten Commandments.

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.

Thank you. This came to my mind too. Seems the original poster has never read this passage.

>>Who cares about the day?>>>

I can tell you read the Bible. God seemed to care about a day. He blessed and Sanctified in Genesis, he said he “made for man”, he performed miracles on it to show it’s true meaning, he even told his people in the ot not to gather food on it...John saw it in Revelation, the Lord’s day......and uh.....oh, this little one..

It’s the largest of the Ten Commandments, in the middle and reveals his name, title, and territory.......Lord, God, Creator of heaven and earth.....

Yeah...He called himself the LORD OF THE SABBATH....so I think he kind of cares about that. Just a little.

Not according to God.

Legalistic law keeping is not the way to earn His favor.

You’re Seventh Day Adventist, aren’t you?

What difference does it make. Can you even be absolutely positive that you are using the same calendar and the same days of the week that were being used 2000 years ago, or 3000 years ago.

Names for the days of the week were arbitrarily designated in the past. Whether your sabbath is on a Saturday or a Sunday, your day of rest/worship is still 7 days after the last one.

I guess you never read the difference between ceremonial “Sabbaths” or shadows, and the one made at creation and put in the Ten Commandments. Shadows point to Christ, done away with at the cross.......the holy 7th day Sabbath is from creation....made for man and BEFORE SIN. It’s not a “shadow”...

Good Bible study helps.

Ok....so Sabbath keeping is required.

Do you do any work on Sabbath?
Cook?
Clean?
Put a bandaid on your child’s knee?
Jesus was condemned for healing on the Sabbath.
Do you carry anything?...anything at all?

What happens if you miss a Sabbath? Do you lose your salvation?

What other rules, other than the other nine big ones do we all have to abide by.

Jesus reserved His most harsh condemnation for the Pharisees.

“All these things I have kept”; said one man.
“Sell everything you own and give it to the poor”

Is this one of the additional rules?
Have you done this yet?

I’m going to start quoting from Rome’s challenge now since it’s obvious.....most of you haven’t read it. Here’s a good one and I agree 100%. She’s got you Protestants nailed too:

Quote from Rome:

The Israelite respects the authority of the Old Testament only, but the Adventist, who is a Christian, accepts the New Testament on the same ground as the Old: viz..an inspired record also. He finds that the Bible, his teacher, is consistent in both parts, that the Redeemer, during His mortal life, never kept any other day than Saturday. The gospels plainly evince to him this fact; whilst, in the pages of the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles, and the Apocalypse, not the vestige of an act canceling the Saturday arrangement can be found.

“A number of years ago” ... 1893!

Here’s the catch: The article demonstrates that the Bible depicts Sunday (”the first day of the week”) as holy, but makes the entirely accurate point does the Bible does not actually explicitly overturn Saturday in favor of Sunday. The user who denies the authority of the Church (which includes far more than the Roman Catholic Church) and instead insists on Sola Scriptura finds an untenable situation, wherein the early Church (including Jesus himself) makes Sunday in praxis but not in explicit doctrine.

The lesson: praxis is doctrine.
